Try Open Source?

by CaptBilly1Eye In reply to Best free CMS software

One place to check out would be opensourcecms.com. Also, I've heard good things about OpenCMS which is based on the J2EE platform. (opencms.org) You'll find a review of it at cmswatch.com.
Good luck in your search.

re:cms

One of the main problems I have seen is that there is presumption of technical knowledge with the user/downloader of the cms/lms client application. I hate to break it to all you IT people, but more then 88% of the people needing them , while they may be educators and the like have no tech knowledge beyond using the computer. try using "Joomla or Moodle" with out knowing html, python etc. it is not going to happen.
I too, am looking for a cms. I have no tech knowledge. I have been teaching fo more then 30 years but any deployment of courses of instruction was accomplished by a/n all together different departmant.

What sort of content?

by bob_steel In reply to Best free CMS software

Basic website like content is easily sorted with Joomla or Mambo: http://www.mamboserver.com/

It's as full-featured as you may want and it's open source - Just takes a bit of work to get small tweaks done if you don't like what's offered.

For a wiki-style site use MediaWiki: - http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki
like what powers Wikipedia. I like it.

Xwiki: http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome

is a nice solution if you like Java rather than that new-fangled php malarkey. Some of the more up-to-date CMS systems like MediaWiki insist on PHP5 which isn't always available from every ISP. Java and Tomcat is well tested and nice and portable (Xwiki comes with an all-in-one package that will install on virtually anything)

What you want is WebAPP CMS Portal

by info In reply to Best free CMS software

What you want is WebAPP CMS Portal.

It is both open source, free CMS software and easy to modify and implement in different systems.

You can find it here: http://www.web-app.net

Good luck!
