Blog, Blog, Blog.

by donweb In reply to Best practices? Sez who?

<p>Okay, so I get into heated debates with these wet behind the ears college kids who don't know the difference between AC and DC current in their computer.  Drives me nuts.  How many remember dropping your deck of punch cards and having to sort them out to get your program (in machine language) to run?</p>
<p>I just love it when I go into a job site to fix a problem and I hand them the DB Schema, logical flow chart, variable list etc etc etc and the 20 something "guru" says "What's all this?"  Well, didn't you learn proper programming in college?  NOOOOOOO.  Instead he learned that Java is the greatest things since sliced bread.  But development workflow?  Wazzat?</p>
<p>BTW, Java was intended for toasters.  Not websites.</p>
<p>Us old time programmers fought hard for a language that we could program in with standard english and now the kids are wanting languages tougher than Cobol to learn. IE Java.</p>
<p>And don't tell me "best practices".  When I took an intro to J2EE/Struts and was told "this is best practices" and I showed how many "best practices" were being violated I was kicked out of the class.  LOL</p>
<p>Didn't you kids ever hear the basic rules of programming and data handling?  J2EE violates about all of them.  Good grief.</p>
<p>Oh this was fun.</p>
<p>And writing a book doesn't make you a guru.  Especially when I can stump you in 2 seconds flat with one of my typically "stupid" questions.  :)</p>

I don't understand

by donweb In reply to Best practices? Sez who?

How many play games on line?  Do you play for money?  <br />
<br />
Okay, I relax at the Zone and play either hearts or spades.  Sure,
I play to win, but if I lose, oh well.  So what is up with these
people who will cheat, cuss, etc etc etc if things are not working out
for them?  I always ask "How much money do you have on this
game?"  <br />
<br />
I can see no reason to get upset about a game on the
internet.   I've been at the top and I've been in the middle
(rarely on the bottom lol)<br />
<br />
What I enjoy doing also is statistical analysis of the games.
Like in hearts, I recorded what was passed to me for about 1000
games.  Analyzed the data and voila!  Now, when I want to, I
can whup anybody because I can play the odds and come out ahead.
Not the mathematical odds but the human odds.  What suit is most
often passed besides hearts?  It may surprise you.  Which is
least often passed?  How can this help you?<br />
<br />
Spades, I will try different strategies just to see how the work out.  It is fun.<br />
<br />
Of course I have played spades and hearts for 40+ years and even won
some live tourneies in my day.  So I guess it just isn't as
thrilling as it was when I was set on proving myself to the world.<br />

Can we all just boycott Microsoft?

by donweb In reply to Best practices? Sez who?

I come from a Fortran, Machine Language, Cobol, Pascal type of
background.  I remember Bill Gates when he was first "borrowing"
software.  We thought he didn't stand a chance against
Apple.  Sigh.<br />
<br />
Well, I have tolerated MS for many years.  Windows anyway.
Why? Because that is what most people use.  BUT I am a MACROMEDIA
man myself.  Give me that Flash and Cold Fusion.  arrrrr
arrrrrr arrrrr<br />
<br />
So I get picked up onto this contract because they wanted somebody who
knew 2 things.  FLASH/ROBOHELP and ugh Front Page.  I know FP
because a number of clients prefer it.  Give them what they want
if they are paying.<br />
<br />
NOW however, they dropped the bombshell on me.  Learn C# and Share Point Portal.  "WE WANT WEBPARTS WE WANT WEBPARTS!"<br />
<br />
Ritzen ratzen piece of crap.  Can MS make this junk any more
complicated to use?  Even the "gurus" are stumped by my
questions.  I always ask the questions nobody else has and nobody
else has ever had to do the things I have to do.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.<br />
<br />
You mean to tell me NOBODY at Microsuck thought to have a CONFIRMATION page for form and survey entries????  <br />
<br />
Oh, and the goody.  My client wants to have a way of color coding
FOLDERS to tell what the status is.  Guess what.  Can't be
done.  Well, according to the gurus it can not.  If their
deafening silence means anything anyway.<br />
<br />
Or the "try this instead" answer.  Grrrrrrrr If I wanted to do THAT I would have said so.  Sheeeeeeeeesh.<br />

Share Point and monkeys

by donweb In reply to Best practices? Sez who?

I have believe that the programming I see in the backend of Microsoft's Share Point is the result of an experiment.  They decided to give a million monkeys computers with Visual Studio and see what came out.  Share Point was the result.  sheeeesh

What? No visitors?

C'mon. Read my blog.  LOL<br />
<br />
Working on some tools for people with the freebie/lowcost
websites.  They will be in Flash.  All the person would have
to do is embed the Flash tool on their site and possibly use an XML
page to feed it data.  OR subscribe to MY db to use the admin
features I have. :)<br />

Once again I'm on the cutting edge

by donweb In reply to Best practices? Sez who?

And NOBODY notices.  sob sob.  I was the first to integrate PayPal Pro and ColdFusion.  Now I have created the first ever Flash only front end for Amazon ECS.  Think anybody will buy it?
