Best Way to have two printers share an e

By jgreer ·
I am currently looking for some suggestions on the best way to have a printer and a plotter share an existing printer network drop. I am thinking of connecting both devices to an auto switch that would direct the traffic to the correct printer. I amalso slightly concerned about any problems that may occur due to this being on a full scale network.

I am a big fan of Intel Netport printer servers but there are also a lot of other brands out there. You plug in one network cable and you can attach up to three printers (two parallel and one serial). They support almost all protocols you might berunning and are very easy to configure.

I'm currently using one to support a laser printer, an inkjet printer and a plotter on the serial port and it works marvelously.

I would use a small network hub. You can get a Linksys 5-port for $35.00. Just hook it up to the drop, then attach 2 cables for each printer. No sharing or switching involved. User should be able to see and print to both.

I think a print server is the better of the two options (hub or print server). You can run into problems sticking hubs here and there if you are already on a large, high traffic network. HP also makes good print servers - they have two and three port versions and work well with all protocols. Hope this helps!
