Most bios's **** (if they are going to **** at all), when a bios upgrade is installed. If the upgrade was not specifically designed for that version of the bios, or if the upgrade is interrupted, then it may ruin the bios.

The BIOS is a computer program stored in non-volitale memory on the motherboard.

There are several ways to "damage" the BIOS on the motherboard.

A BIOS virus.

Flashing the BIOS with the wrong code.

ESD (static) damage to the BIOS IC.

The first thing your friend should do, is to try re-setting the CMOS memory. This usually involves setting a jumper, powering up the PC, shuting down, and re-setting the jumper.

Most motherboard manufactures recommend re-setting the CMOS memory after flashing the BIOS.
This is also a simple way to correct mistakes made when adjusting the BIOS settings.
