bizarre monitor resolution problem

By lisacav ·
All of a sudden my monitor is doing strange things. When I am working on the computer it will sometimes, now most of the time, goes from being 800x600 resolution to a resolution that makes the screen appear too big to fit the text on the screen. It will cut off about 1/4 of the information and no
matter what I try to do other than re-boot it will not change back to the
correct resolution. Does anyone know what it might be from? Thanks in
advance.

Sounds as the sync signals of your monitor go astray. You did not state if your monitor is a recent one or not. You could have it serviced to check those sync signals. They lock on at boot time, but after a while (when the electronics gets warm) they lose grip.
If your monitor is really old, consider buying a new one.
Hope this helps
Bye

Check both ends of the monitor signal cable
a pin might be not in position and grounded.

Your desktop resizing tsr may be pre-released driver or you are not using correct driver for the display adapter. make the adapter refresh rate setting to optimal.

change your 800x600 to a different and restart. check for any changes.
if your display adapter is 3dfx test direct 3d from directx diag with 3d enable and disable mode. upgrade directx version
to the latest.

Your video card sends the necessary sync signals to your monitor for your particular video settings. I.e. 800x600, 1024x768 etc. If your monitor is capable of this resolution it will activate its internal sync circuits to produce the necessary scan frequencies for this resolution. Clearly the problem could be in your video card or in your monitor. I suggest that when the problem occurs, keep your computer on and turn your monitor off. Leave it off for the amount of time that it takes your computer to reboot (approx. 2-min). Then turn it back on. If your resolution is now normal then the problem is your monitor. If the resolution is still messed up try another video card. It doesn't have to be an expensive card to try. Just so you can set your 800x600 to see what happens. Hope this is of some help.
