Black screen with blinking line.

I was using my hp. and i turned it off, the next morning i attempted
to turn my computer on, and now it wont get passed the black screen
with the blinking line at the top left corner. the one before windows
even begins to start....i tried reformatting my hard drive using the
windows xp cd. and still no luck. it get stuck at that one spot...i have
no clue on what i should do, or what it could be.. i need help!..

it sounds like your mbr is corrupted. that holds all the data
structure and partition of the hard drive. boot with windows
xp and go to console mode. type mbr/fix and press enter
if that doesn't fix it. i would have a disk utility program check
the hard drive for bad sectors. After all that, i would format
the drive and reinstall windows xp

low level format

if you have already formatted using the xp format, then you probably won't be able to do the fixmbr.
I have had this problem before and using a utility from one of the hard drive companies to do a low level format got the drive back to being able to reinstall windows. (Active Killdisk freeware version will also do this)
