Books on Security

By dlawlor ·
Hi all,

I am looking for a business type book describing the different elements of internet security, possibly detailing Firewalls, VPN, Authentication, Security Auditing, Intrusion Detection etc... Does anyone know of any such books that are relevant?

Regards

The rules change too rapidly.

I'm not sure anyone can market a book on computer security before it's obsolete. I would look up research papers, even if it means going to a university library, to get more current info. Join a computer security organization and go to their conferences, you'll hear the latest and best from practitioners and it will be fairly current. (Twenty years ago the Computer Security Institute and the Information System Security Association were the leaders, but that's probably changed.) Or just sign up for some classes. You may already know enough that you could and should bully your way into an intermediate level class and skip the beginner stuff, or you may not. I'd be leery of books. I contributed material to a book once; I gathered my source data in 2000, which means most of it was from 1999, and by the time the book was edited, approved, published, marketed, and people were actually reading it, it was the middle of 2002. In my field that was ok, but in computer security I would think that a three-year time lag is a killer.
