boot-up message

when my pc boot-up, there is a message that says "no ide cable detected" but it does go through and boot windows 98, what does it mean?

I suspect that you have a ATA 66/100/133 IDE controller that is not detecting the required 80 wire cable to support the higher speed hard drive interface.

The common cause of this, is a backwards 80 wire cable. Try swapping the drive and motherboard ends of the cable.
Or, try a different cable.
