Browser?

By Shanghai Sam ·
Network neighborhood sporadically loses computers. Usually all domain members except the pdc, and the bdc's at remote locations leave network neighborhood. The browstat command says that it cannot find the master browser using the GetAdapterStatus. We reboot the pdc and the neighborhood is back to normal.
The last time this happpened, the bdcs were also gone. Rebooting the pdc did not restore the connection. Netdom revealed that the secure connection between the domain controllers was gone. After using Browstat to force an announcement, the bdc eventually came back. Why are we losing these icons in neighborhood? Are they not registering with WINS? Can losing these icons cause the secure channel between the dc's to go down?

My guess is that you have a workstation that is acting as the master browser for you segment, that means the PCD is getting the browse list from that workstation. If the user of that station shuts the machine down without logging off then the PDC does not know that it should elect a new browse master. There is a GUI style program that will help you find the browse master it is called Browser Monitor, Browmon.exe, it shows all domains and workgroups on your network and tells which computers are master browsers, which ones are backup browsers, etc. You can find this on the NT Resource disk or search for it online.
