Browser Password Lock

By ububbaron ·
I have a friend using IE in Windows 98 who needs to lock out one of his children from all internet access. Has anyone seen just a simple password lock or other block for the Browser itself. He is not looking to spend $30 or $40 on content filtering software, he just wants a lock on the front door...the whole front door.

Anybody got a suggestion?

Two things come to mind that he can do for free.

1. BIOS password, prevents booting the computer.
2. Content Adviser, already in IE. Only prevents 'bad' sites from being viewed.

1. Don't want to lock out the whole computer, just IE.
2. He has filtering, but it just doesn't protect against everything unnacceptable.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I should clarify, when I say the whole front door, I just mean to the Internet. He still wants the PC itself to be available without password protection.

Not sure which version of IE, but the one I am looking at is IE 5.5 ... go to the tools menu -> security tab. Make sure Internet is highlighted (the world) and click the custom level button. Scroll all the way to the bottom and choose "prompt for username and password" ... that should do the trick.

Hope this helps.

This setting didn't do anything for me. From what I read in the help file, it only comes into play when you visit servers in the Internet that require password authentication. Thanks for looking.

If he wants the child to have access to the computer but not the internet then there are a number of apps he can use. However, as you probably know, there aren't any free ones to be found.

His other option is to use windows poledit. It comes withwindows and must be install from the win98 CD or downloaded from any number of sites. Here's a link to one such site that gives some examples also: http://www.webtube.co.uk/Support/using_system_policy_editor.htm.

He can restrict just about anything he wants by user. However, user profiles are required to accomplish this and a little studying. Poledit takes some experimentation to use.

Go to
http://www.zisman.ca/poledit/
and get the Windows 98 Policy Editor. The site also has a lot of information on how to use this tool to restrict users's access rights. I haven't used poledit in a few years, but it will do the job for you

Cheers

Jim
