Browsing and SMS

By dave_medley ·
I have some machines that are running Windows 95 and are not able to browse SMS servers on different subnets. I get an "error reading drive ?, Abort Retry Fail",when the machine tries to connect to the SMS Servers UNC from the Logon Script. Whats strange is that I can browse these Servers from within Windows Explorer but cannot do a NET VIEW from a command prompt. I can view an SMS Server on my subnet but cannot view an SMS Server on another subnet. I can however view other Servers on the remote subnets. So far I have done the following.

1. Rebuilt all of the WINS Servers and verified that they are resolving names.

2. Used BROWMON, BROWSTAT, and DOMMON to verify the Master and Segment Browsers for the Domain.

3. Tried shuttingdown the SMS Services on all the SMS Servers.

4. Removed the SMS Client from the workstations.

5. Changed the workstations NetBIOS name so it would have to re-register with WINS.

Has anybody seen this before?

Thanks for any Help

Make sure that if you have sharing enabled on the 95 machines that you disable LM Announce so they don't try to become master browsers themselves. Also make sure the 95 station are in the same domain as the SMS servers

Check both your GUID & SID on the 95 boxes, although 95 couldn't care less nor could the network care less if 9x has guid that are the same, SMS 20 will.

Another suggestion, can you drop a package, can you remote, can you view inventory..If you can do 2 of three of any of these, the issue is not with SMS, rather with the system it's self. Ie., if you can remote to some 9x boxes and not others, it may be a conflict (such as stated above). Is 9x even on a domain, do you have domain services running (not just installed) rem, 9x does not require this to see each other. Only that they be in same workgroup. Is this global? If it is , then it may be a setting on your SMS system settings. However, if you can inventory a client, & Drop a test package, then SMS IS seeing the HD. If you can't (by brouse think you mean remote?) then its an issue with SMS on the Box, check to see if something is messing it up. Ie, SQL, Virus scanners, etc. Good Luck- AL
