Browsing workstations under Win XP....

By roy626 ·
We have two network segments in our company (network 1 on 1st floor & network 2 on 2nd), other workstations are running under Win 98SE. If I am at network 1, I can't browse workstations on network 2, although when I try to PING the workstation, there is a reply.

What's wrong with this? Are there incompatibilities with Win 98SE with that of Win XP Pro on setting network protocols?

Please help.

Thanks.

When you say "network segments", are you talking about different workgroups?

Normally you can only browse ohter computers within the same workgroup.

If you are talking about different domains, you can not browse a different domain unless Trustrelationships have been established between the 2 domains.

The windows 98 users need to have access rights to the XP machines. Just like NT they must be included as users with permissions. Open management and add the users needing access to the XP computers. To get to managment right click on my computer and select management. Go to users and add the user names with matching login passwords.

Not mentioned: Wins, static IP

Create a hosts file with translates the ip-adresses to netbios names.

Good luck!

Do all the machines have TCP/IP loaded on them. If so, remove the NetBEUI and the IPX/SPX protocols. If you need one or both of the above protocols, leave it (or them) installed and make sure that you set TCP/IP as the default protocol on the advance tab of TCP/IP.

The problem probably is that NetBEUI is set as the default protocol and it is a non-routeable protocol and it can not be routed between the segments.

Remember, with Windows less is better. The fewer protocols and drivers you can get away with being loaded gives you less chance of having problems.
