BSOD when installing XP

I have an HP G60-235dx that had Vista on it, but now I installed a new HD (due to a virus/HD crash) and am trying to install XP on it, but keep getting the BSOD – stop: 0x0000007B. I’ve read many forums and it seems to be a Chipset driver issue, but I haven’t found the correct one or been able to load additional drivers from the usb thumb drive during the XP installation. It’s a SATA HD. I’ve also tried using an XP disk slipstreamed with SP3, but nothing ever comes up when booting from the CD. Any ideas?

I tried that, but didn’t see the option in the BIOS.

If you can’t find it in the Bios, look up the jumpers in the drive, one of them is for compatibility mode.

Format

Maybe you can try to format the HD on a desktop computer to check if the disk is OK… Believe me, the DOD (Dead on Delivery) figures for home class HD’s is growing quickly since the 500 GB models launch some yrs ago. Also the lifetime span is being shorter.

This has happened to me a couple of times, especially with the new Sata drives. It pays to insert the corresponding CD from the manufacturer: Seagate, WD… and have the utility format it for you (prepare it) after that Xp installs flawless.

Drive transfer rate mismatch

There are a couple of drive transfer rates in SATA drives. When I had to replace an older SATA drive with a new one I was advised to download a file that created a bootable “tools” cd. Once I installed the drive I booted to the tools cd and had to change the transfer rate from 3 GB/s to 1.5 GB/s to match my older motherboard limitations, and it worked with no problem. I don’t know if this is your problem but I thought it was worth a post. Good luck!

You need to make a Slipstreamed Install Disc and include the SATA Driver if there is no Compatibility Mode in the BIOS.

Then go to HP and download the XP SATA Driver and include in in the Slipstreamed Install Disc that you make and it should be OK. 😉

Thanks for all the help. I was able to use nLite and slipstreamed SP2 with XP and also the XP Sata drivers ( I found an option for all intel drivers to be sure). I am a bit worried about future implications from downgrading to XP from Vista since the BIOS/etc is setup for Vista. If I do have any other problems, I’ll be sure to start a new Q&A. Thanks again everyone!

OK osmeg beat me to it by 17 hrs (GRRRR) lol but i was going to add to my post exacly whe he said…oh well…

try disabling the virtual techniolgy support in the bios, i was lookingat the manaul (at

but cant find any setting for SATA mode in that either. Its possible that that notebook doesnt support Windows XP. Try downloading “nlite” to slipstream the sata druivers and other hardware drivers into the windows setup and try that. http://www.nliteos.com/index.html
