Cable modem, router, 3 computers ohmy!

By public ·
Hiya folks. Quickie.

I have myself a little network of 3 computers (nt server, 2000pro, and win98) that was hooked up into a netopia router/hub. Had my own intranet with ip addresses on my comps 192.168.1.2 (3 and 4)and of course 192.158.1.1 being my gateway (router). Fine and dandy.

ANyway, got rid of the sDSL line and upgraded to a cable modem. Cheaper and FASter.

I just got my cable modem installed (actually recorded a 2.0 meg/sec download WOW) BUT now i am forced to make my 2000 machine recieve an IP address from THIER DHCP server and i have to disconnect my server and 98 machine from the network so they dont grab the IP address.

Can I make my router use that DHCP server to grab the address and just have everything on my side of the router just use 192.168 addresses?

Quite a few people have asked me this question but I havent been able to answer it. Now i am in the same predicament. Blah.

thanks for the help.
and please, tell your MCSE friends DONT WEAR THOSE SILLY PINS. We know your MCSEs. You dont have to rub it in. blah.

take care

I can't answer specifically for the Netopia router/hub, but my network system does precisely that. The router is an LRP firewall/router that supports the DHCP client on the interface that is connected to the cable modem and all the systems behind the router have static addresses.

With some cable systems, you have to supply a particular host name to receive a DHCP address (mine is that way) so whether you can do it with a particular router depends on whether it will act as a DHCP client andwhether it can be told to send the host name as part of the DHCP request.

Hey you must be on @home!

First: Check Netopia's web page for a ios/firmware upgrade for your hub/router/DHCP server
If they dont support your external interface to use dhcp here are some suggestions:

Suggestion1:
You can try configuring your 2k server as a router, with the external interface using DHCP (I don't know if this will work or not- I dont have a test machine in front of me)- Use Win2k NAT and DHCP server for your internal network- you will need a second NIC for the router.Suggestion2:
I like my server to have some horsepower and off load the functions of DHCP, routing etc.
Invest around $150 you can get a firewall/router/switch/dhcp server like the linksys or netgear that support dhcp on the external router network(I have the linksys- I'm pretty happy with it- but there a ton of other cable/dsl routing appliances that are out there)

Hope this helps.

The internet connection sharing in 2000 works very good but Im not sure how secure it is. so you could hook up 2k to the cable modem with one nic then set up set up ICS to share the bandwith. hope this helps
