Depends on Your System

by TheChas In reply to Can I install or upgrade ...

Here are the minimum system requirements for Windows 8.

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

Additional requirements to use certain features:

To use touch, you need a tablet or a monitor that supports multitouch.

To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768.

To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768.

I always figure on double the CPU and RAM along with at least 10 times the drive space.

It also looks like the Windows XP to Windows 8 upgrade follows a similar path as the XP to Windows 7 upgrade. That is, you will need to reinstall any application software you want to use with Windows 8 (assuming it is compatible).

The Microsoft installation guide states that you only get to keep user accounts and files when you upgrade from XP.

Windows XP User accounts and files

I myself would clone your existing hard drive so that you have an easy path back to XP should Windows 8 not work for you.

Yes, you can upgrade from Win XP to Win 8

It is possible to upgrade from Win XP to Windows 8 directly. However, the configuration of your system should meet the minimum requirements. Otherwise, it is possible.
