Can I share the CD-ROM on my Linux Box?

By dberkefeld ·
Is it possible to share the CD-ROM and a single directory on my Linux Box over my network so I can access them on my Win98-based notebook?

I already use samba on my Linux Box and have been able to mount shares from my notebook on my Linux Box.

You should be able to do this once you setup the proper shares through Network Neighborhood on your notebook since you already have the Samba server running on your Linux box. For info on how to do this, goto: www.sambaix.com/Documentation and select the Networking Setup for Windows 95 link. For info on how to configure the Samba server, just go to samba.org. (Or use the SWAT utility).

However if all you want to do is access files on a CDROM (not map the drive), then you could just simply use an FTP client and log on using an account with the proper permissions. You could use a nice client like CuteFtp or Win 98's own (start menu, Run, and type ftp).

Hope this helps.

Sorry for the run on sentence at the beginning there. What I meant was that once you have the shares set up on your Linux box, you should be able to access them with Net Neighborhood on your Win 98 notebook.

Absolutely. Set up the share the same way your current shares are set up. This is done through the smb.conf file, or you can use the SWAT application which runs in a web browser. Keep in mind that this can be a pain since the drive will need to bedismounted then mounted again every time you change the CD.
