Many possibilities here

      The most obvious however is when you setup the USB WiFi Device did you enter any Security that the Router Employs? Things like a Passphrase would be the first thing to look at.

      The Device is connecting to the Router but that doesn’t mean that it will get past the router if it’s not set to the Security permissions in the Router, after all that is why you are using a router to begin with to prevent any Wireless Connection from logging into your WiFi and downloading things that you do not approve.

      Now assuming that the NB can connect to the Net did you originally setup only 1 System being able to log in with a WiFi Address? This is quite possible, and in the Setup of the Router itself and is best checked with a Wired Connection.

      Another possibility is when you installed the Software for the USB Device did it install any Networking Software? A lot of these things want to install their own Networking Software which isn’t required and you are told in the Printed Instructions not to install it, but none the less when you run the setup you are prompted to install the Networking Software.

      OK I have not seen any Routers

      For a very long time that have not come with some form of Security. You really need security on any WiFi Device to stop a neighbor logging onto your Internet Connection and downloading Kiddy Porn and leaving you stuck on the Sexual Offenders Register, or like a old couple here a few years ago getting Raided by the Police because someone used their Unsecured WiFi Internet Connection and connected with young Asian Female Exchange Students meet them and Rapped them.

      The Router should have some form of Default Security as they can cover a area up to 500 Meters about a quarter of a mile in radius, and having one open is just begging for abuse.

      If the Router was supplied by an ISP contact them and get the Security involved and if you got it personally you’ll need to contact it’s maker for it’s Default Security which should be changed anyway. 😉

        just got the laptop and router over the weekend and am moving in a few days, i have put a password on it as of this morning, the router is not the problem, the usb wireless adapter is, i uninstalled it last night and reinstalled it just to make sure it did not try to put its own networking software on it and it did not. my network places shows i am connected to the router and so does the realtek 11n adapter but still cant get it to let me bring up google or any other webpage. the network places does however not bring up any wifi when i try to bring up wifi’s in the area with it, but the realtek does. just dont understand why i can connect to the wifi and not get onto the internet, i even borrowed a friends cell phone the he uses as his wifi interntet connection, it connected to it with him next to me with his my laptop, he could get on the inter net with the cell phone and my laptop but i could not bring any pages up even though it said i was connected to his cell phone’s wifi tether. lol and now i have a headache.

      You might have a virus/malware

      It is normal for a laptop or PC to show the “network device” as connected, be it a router or a modem, especially if you installed the software. If you were able to connect to the cell phone as tether, then it is not a problem with your wi-fi. Now a days, most viruses and/or malware, prevent you from connecting to any website, in fact,some of them will act as a proxy to take you only to their rogue business to “pay” them for useles virus solutions.

        i hooked it up via a line and can connect regurlarly to my modem, just not through the usb adapter,it is like the computer is letting me connect to the router but not the internet through the usb adapter. i think i will buy a different wifi adapter or have a network adapter put in the desktop when i move. lol thing is a pain in the neck lol

      Let Windows install the adapter.

      If you didn’t try this already, uninstall the adapter software you installed. Restart and plug the usb adapter in and let Windows find and install whatever drivers, etc. came with the operating system. Check your router settings to make sure you’re not blocked by any filters like MAC address filtering. You can find IP address, MAC, etc. numbers in Windows by typing “network connections” in the search box, right click on the connection then “properties” then “details”. Do this while you have it wired so you’re sure you have a connection. Also, try disabling any filters to allow any device access, disable your security, and enable SSID broadcast and see if you can connect. Don’t leave your wireless in this condition longer than necessary! If one of them is the issue you know what to work on.

      I know you’ve probably done this, but when I set up a wireless router here

      In reply to can not connect to the internet with my realtek 11n usb wireless adapter

      I have to do a few things like:

      1. Make sure it has a working connection to the Internet;

      2. give the router the info to log onto the ISP, including User ID and password;

      3. Set up the wireless NIC so it uses the router’s IP address as it’s gateway.

      4. Set up the SSID, filtering, and other security stuff
