Can Theory only help one to become a successful IT Manager/Director

I have red alot about IT management, but never have the chance to do it in real job situation. This makes me cautious about accepting any job offers I may receive for such a position. Is this a normal feeling, any thoughts?

I've been working with incredibly successful people who had little theory. It just provide landmarks warning signs and points to best practices. This is VERY valuable but then what makes the difference is how you put it into action.

being cautious and/or maybe having unspoken fears about becoming a manager seems normal to me.
If as I assume you come from individual contributor, you have to make yourself comfortable with the fact that you becoming responsible for people under your lead, not just yourself.

Then, consider this, you've probably never been working all alone, probably you had partners of which you needed some job done, see how you got that from them.
How you defined what your expectation to them was, how you controlled that it was done, how you reacted and solved the situation when the result was not good enough for you.
This will most probably tell you a lot about what kind of manager you are or will be.
As well what are the things you do best while getting someone do something for you ? what are the things you do worse ? on those you'll have to find someone who that better than yourself in this area and delegate to this person.

Then on the more technical side of the job, you may not know everything, be ready to have to rely on others to analyze the details of the situation and use their input to make the decisions.

In a nutshell the best managers I've encountered obviously know a lot about their field, mostly not being an expert, but able to understand the experts working for them. Always looking to know more about what is relevant to their scope (I doubt the IT manager knows about the bits and bytes of the vista boot process or C++ object programming or how to implement domain policies in AD, but he knows what those can do to make his IT work and he has efficient people to do it), and people persons who know how to make each person give their best (put the right person at the right place, whip the slackers, motivate each individual in the team etc)

What do you really want to do (Tech or Management)?

If you want to be in Management - jump right in and "get your hands dirty". Best lessons are obtained on the job.

You could start off as an IT Project manager and learn to extract yourself from the tech details, manage teams, negotiate for resources and budgets for which you don't have direct control and execute plans which you and your project team have developed with stakeholder buy-in.

After a number (3-5yrs?) of successful (and not-so successful projects), you'll be good to go!
