Cannot connect to Internet

By DiggerJackson ·
I have multiple PCs with Multiple OSes on simple flat LAN with NetGear RT311 Internet Router connected to a cable modem. One PC, a Win2k laptop, cannot connect to the Internet. All of the others work fine.

Computer Management System Events on this laptop show two unusal:

1) The system failed to register adapter with settings... -- suggests to do a "ipconfig /registerdns" -- This did not help.

2) IPRIP was unable to add a route to the system table. The data is the error code...

Any suggestions?

This laptop has given this problem in the past but a simple reboot has always fixed it.

I tried to uninstall TCP/IP and then reinstall it (this has fixed other problems in the past for me), but it won't let me uninstall it because is says that two other components are using TCP/IP:
1) Simple TCP/IP Services
2) Print Services for UNIX

I do not know how to turn off either of those services.

Any suggestions?

Cannot connect to Internet

I had the same problem. To remove the simple tcp/ip services and services for unix, logon as administrator, go to the control panel, add/remove software, add/remove windows components and look in the networking services and other networking options. You will need the Win2k CD.

Once you have done that, restart. Then go to the properties of the network adapter and add another protocol ie Netbeui or IPX. Then uninstall IP, and restart.

Then add IP in again, and service pack, and add-in the services for UNIX and TCP/ip simple services.

This is a pain but it does happen. Also worthwhile updating the Bios of the laptop if its not up to date, as I had to do that on another machine to fully fix the first problem.

Cheers

Cannot connect to Internet

The screen on this laptop just went out so I had to give it in for warranty repair before I was able to try to suggested fix by Beldin30. I'll have to wait until I get it back from the repair shop to see if this works.

Thanks Beldin30 - I'll letyou know ASAP.

Cannot connect to Internet

I just got the laptop back from the shop because they did not repair my screen in a timely fashion and I could not go another day without it. When I hooked it up to my LAN I had full Internet Services via my NetGear RT311!

This is consistent with what I had experienced in the past. Perhaps reinstalling the TCP/IP stack isn't the actual required solution but there is something in that machine that is not behaving properly. Any more comments on this?

BTW - This is a Compaq Armada M300 PIII-600 328 MB RAM, Win2000 Professional using the built-in NIC (IntelPRO/100 MiniPCI)

Beldin30, Thank you for your proposed solution (details on how to remove TCP/IP), but my problem magically disappeared as it has done in the past and I still do not know what the cause actually is or what will immediately rectify it. When it happens again, I will explore more thoroughly. I will leave this open for any more ideas.

I am new to this site and not sure what the proper protocol is for closing posted questions -- please let me know if I should handle this differently.
