Take ownership

by csheppard In reply to Cannot Delete a file

go to security (make sure admin is set in here and has full control) also make sure that in the drive security of where the file is, the admin has full control of that too.

on the file though, go to security and then click on advanced. make the administrator owner of that file and click ok.

then delete the file

nope tried that

I would love to do that... do not have permissions to even view that tab... I am loged in as admin...

I tried actualy going in the upper level folder and change its permissions and have that trickle down to that file and the permissions wouldnt apply lol...

huh?

You said "do not have permissions to even view that tab"..... so, how do you know the file that you want to delete is even in there if you can't view it?

So, what's the file that you want to delete? Is it in use by the system? If so, it won't let you delete it.

That doesnt make sense

You have administrative rights but do not have permissions to delete a file...and you're saying you can't view the file either right?

That is right

I am not allowed to open the file at all to view its contents. I also cannot view the security tab. This is on my w2k3 server too.

Cannot believe this

by CookieOrc In reply to Cannot Delete a file

I actually used a program unlocker to delete the file and it said that nothing was locking the, and then gave me the error that it could not delete it...

Do you think it is safe to boot from a linux disk to delete it? It is on my server and i do not know if most distobutions have the right scsi drivers...

u can definately use a bootable linux cd and delete the file.

just make sure its not a system file.

but before u do that, on the security tab, even though its telling you that you don't have permissions..

try going to advanced, and add the administrator as the owner and hit okay.

close out and reopen it. then in the security, add the administrator and give it full control.

just try it.

Still not there

by CookieOrc In reply to knoppix

The advanced tab was still completely locked down... could not change a single thing. When I went to view the owner tab under the advanced option. Then under the Current Owner box it said: "Unable display current owner" and then it showed my admin account and group...
