Cannot download from Windows Update

By TracyF ·
Hi all-

I'm working to resurrect a college student's PC that was riddled with viri & spyware. All of that is clean now. My next step was to check for updates &, horrors, it had apparently never been updated!

It shows as XP Home- no service packs on it. When I went to Windows Update, it wanted to install the new BITS 2.0 & WinHTTP 5.1- but the install fails each time. All I get is a pop up saying it has failed- nothing else to help troubleshoot this (thanks MS). I need this in order to get the rest of the updates.

I found & downloaded the program & tried to run it directly from the PC but it will come back as "access denied"? This is a private computer, purchased from Dell about two years ago. She is the only owner so I'm perplexed on the "access denied" message.

Help?

Tracy

Permissions, SP1 or Open Ports

by julie.schneider In reply to Cannot download from Wind ...

Tracy,

Are you logged in with Admin rights to the machine? These rights could be hammered due to the spyware/viruses.

Possibly you need at least SP1 for this program to function correctly?

Also, if you have any software/hardware firewalling, I'd check for blocked outbound ports.

Hope this helps.

There are 3 users on this machine- all are "administrators".

I assumed the spy/viri did this but how now to recitify w/o access to the recovery CD's (college is far away & closed for the holidays)?

I'll assume that I cannot use my own XP Pro CD to do an "over the top" repair install?

I have the MS security update CD- this also fails to install- that's where I was hoping to add SP1.

No firewalls on as I troubleshoot this one.

OS PROBLEMS

by jhansen In reply to Cannot download from Wind ...

this can only be OS related problems. I know it sounds like a pain in the neck but you should just format and reinstall. Don't use the dell recover disks unless you want a slow over burndened pc with too much crap that you will never use. Your working on a dell default image trying to make it work correctly. that is your mistake, you have not done anything else wrong. Trust me i speak from experience.

Same issue

by twilson79 In reply to OS PROBLEMS

Had 2 computers with av installed. Something got thru and opened everything up to everyone, it seems. I have spent the past 2.5 mos. trying to get this off of the hd. Fdisk /mbr, formatting, finally got a trial version of winhek and used an old fdisk on cd and found that there was a portion of the disk I am being allowed access to. This is on a "low-level formatted" hd. It explains the reloads that were "clean" that reinfected even using registered cds. I learned through all the cramming that I have done to get this far, that there are some viruses that don't even have to open to infect. They just have to be on the disk. I had been using manufacturer's cds but since this is on a hidden part of the hd, I am trying to find a utility that will work in dos and eradicate this section. It won't even let programs boot that might erase it. Hope you have better luck than I have. I just need to find the right mechanism. If anyone can help, please let me know.

Partition Magic? This may allow you to erase all partitions on the hard drive. Not sure if it would help but it is worth a try.

Partitions

by ali40961 In reply to Same issue

From experience, some older Dell and Compaq machines have a "hidden" partition. Compaq has a utility to remove this partition but I have not found one for Dell machines. If you can afford Partition Magic, it will probably solve the issue so you can access.

Dig around because I found plenty of documentation concerning this issue. (Was hard to find but I seem to remember the info coming from the Compaq support site.)

It kinda sounds like whatever it was infected with hosed the permissions.

Your users may "show" that they are Administrators, but they may not actually be.

Can you pull up a command prompt?

Can you get into the registry editor?

Check those things and lemme know.

If you can access those I could very well be wrong, but I don't think that I am.

If you can not get into those things, you will want to go to the Avert site and get a few tools from there...

You more than likely still have some nasties hiding on your box and need to get them off with a fine toothed comb before further problems begin to appear.
