Cannot find server....

By jbauer ·
I just installed a new maching at a client. It runs XP. I connected it to the domain successfully and can access all of the mapped drives. What I cannot do is access the internet. It gives me a cannot find server error. I released/renewed the ip address but this did not solve this. I also cannot set up outlook as it gives me a cannot connect to exchange server error. Any ideas? Thanks!

Setup your DNS and Gateway in the DHCP Properties.

There are several possibilities, but since it is XP the next thing I'd check is th the XP firewall. I've seen it cause similar problems. Also, try pinging or opening a web site using the IP address rather than the URL. If you can ping or open the site with the IP but not with the URL it's almost definetly a DNS issue. Finally, try setting up the machine with a static IP being sure to enter the DNS entries and default gateway. If it works like that there may be a problem with the DHCP config.

Check LAN Settings under Tools, Internet Options, Connections. Make sure it's not setup to use a proxy.

One more thing. Try turning off the XP Firewall for testing purposes. I have had trouble with XP Firewall before. Turned it off. System started working. Turned firewall back on, system still worked. Customer called back a week later with same issue again. Walked him thru turn-off/turn-on and it started working again.

I did two things, and one or both solved this issue. I unpluged the firewall since I saw that this company was close to its maximum users. So unplugging the firewall cleared this user backup. Also, I checked the TLS 1.0 box on in IE settings. I believe the first task solved the issue, but who knows. Thanks for all your help!
