Cannot install Win98/ME

By Red Dragoon ·
I just updated the BIOS on my Ami motherboard to support a WD 40gb hard drive. Now when I try to install 98, I get an error: 'Setup has detected a corrupt Setup (.CAB) file and cannot continue.' I have tried three different 98 cd's and one Me cd. I have also tried fdisk and format several times. I have also tried copying the files to the hard drive and running Setup from there. One time, I think Trend Guard detected the presence of a virus, but I booted to a Norton cd, and it didn't find anything. Could the virus be in the mbr? And if so, how do I clean it? Help!

Try reverting to the last BIOS and see if it is an issue with the update?!?

With some hardware configurations, Windows 98 can have problems with hard drives larger than 32GB.

Partition the hard drive with a 31.5GB primary DOS partition and the remainder as an extended DOS partition.
You can either create 1 or several logical drives in the extended DOS partition.

I use my logical drives for the Page File (virtual memory), and for storing data files.

With virtual memory on it's own drive, you don't have to worry about the swap file getting fragmented. Nor, willscandisk and defrag continually stop because the drive contents have changed.

With data files on a separate drive, backing up your data is a simple task.

Now, AMI does NOT make many motherboards. There primary business is to create the 'core' BIOS code used by a number of motherboard manufactures.

Was the BIOS specifically for your make and model motherboard?
You did download it from the motherboard manufacture, correct?

If the BIOS was not from the motherboard manufacture, the code may not properly support the IDE controller on the board. Or, any other 'custom' design features of the hardware on the motherboard.

You might also try an alternate boot disk.

The bootdisk from www.madboot.com supports newer CD drives and IDEcontrollers than the files on a W98 startup disk.

Get into the BIOS and disable the antivirus.... Were your 98 cds OEM? the cabs contain all the setup files and are stringed so installation will only work when all cabs (about 72) are good.

What was the result of ur fdisk?

Disabled BIOS anti-virus. Fdisk and fdisk /mbr did not help.
