Cannot logon to XP pro workstation

By lbricket ·
We installed XP pro on a new machine. After the installion was complete the login screen came up, but it did not let you logon as the Admin or as the created users.. It gives an error message about cannot login to the domain... We do not have a NTdomain.. we run novell...

The only way I was able to fix the error was completly reinstall XP without the workstation being connected to the network.. then load the Novell client and it worked just fine...

any ideas why this happens??

Cannot logon to XP pro workstation

by Joseph Moore In reply to Cannot logon to XP pro wo ...

It sounds like when you installed XP the first time, you set it up as a Domain member, instead of as a Workgroup member. And like you said, you don't have a NT domain.
But, if the XP box thought it was a domain member of domain X, then it would try and authenticate to a domain member in that domain; since it could not find a domain controller, you would get the error.
What you should have done, instead of just reinstalling XP, was click the Domain drop-down box on the login screen and choosethe machine name. IF the XP was was named XPBOX, for example, the option you should have chosen was "XPBOX (This Computer)"
At that point, you then could have logged in using the LOCAL administrator account (and password) that you set during the XPinstall.
You then would have been logged in as the local admin on the XP box.
At that point, you could have changed the membership to Workgroup mode.

hope this helps

Thanks for the reply, but we did not add the NT domain, it done something all by its self when setup run... No way to change the domain or pick a server in the login.. the only thing that shows for a log in is the windows login screen asking for a password, it does not offer any way to change which server you can connect to just the login name and password box...

Cannot logon to XP pro workstation

Thank you for your answer its a good idea...

But I dont think I made it clear that you cannot login.. when the computer restarted for the last time it prompted you login the only problem is that we did not enter any passwords.. by default the admin password should be blank and also the users that were created... we did not enter any passwords but when you tried to enter it would give you the error cannot login to domain check login and password.. we never set it up on a domain.... Its almost like it went out found some NT domain floating in the wind and set up a login to it?? Only problem is we have no idea where the domain is at??? we dont have one... we run novell... so we were stuck and cannot login as admin or anyother.. so we hadto reinstall , unhook from the network while the install was in progress and then load the client... worked like a charm then ,but we are still unsure as to whats causing the problem..
