Cannot open .exe files

By Megtek ·
Hi

Windows 2000 - I cannot open any .exe files. Seems that I can open any other file. Just not .exe's. I have scanned the pc with three different virus programs and it comes up clean. The error I get is:

Not a valid win32 application

Started happening when I tried to open a file using media player.

I dunno...any tips - please...

If DKlippert's solution doesn't work, you might verify that .exe have the proper association. From DOS prompt, enter assoc .exe, and verify that its pointing to exefile. If this is OK, you may need to check the following registry entry (enter regedit at Start>Run and go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command key. The (default) entry for this key should be "%1" %*

If this registry entry is something different, you may want to try the solution on this site: http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBN/tip6600/rh6615.htm

Hope this helps
