Cannot ping NetBIOS printer name

By drrubinai ·
I am having an HP LaserJet 5000 printer with JetDirect Network Card installed. My LAN is a part of the local intranet having a DHCP & WINS server running. The printer is set for DHCP. The configuration it is getting is as follows (printed from the configuration menu).

Host Name: NPI599FD2
Printer IP: 10.24.1.47
Mask: 255.255.240.0
Gateway: 10.24.0.64
DHCP Server: 10.254.0.100
Domain Name: Not specified
DNS Server: 196.15.32.126
WINS Server: 196.15.32.158

The problem is no machine can ping the printer with its host name. IP number ping is working fine but IP is subjected to change any time due to DHCP. I don't have the control of DHCP server machine with me otherwise I can have a pool of IPs fixed for my printers.

Any idea??

correct me if i am wrong but i dont think jetdirect supports netbios. however, you can refer to your printer via its ip address using the TCP/IP protocol. Normally, we set up fixed devices such as servers and printers with static ip addresses and request the administrator to exclude those addresses in your dhcp ip pool. otherwise you may have to reconfigure all your printers to point to the print devices every now and then whenever the ip lease expires.

hope this helps.

Jetdirect will support netbios. This is a DNS issue. Do you have a router? Your DNS and WINS servers are on a different network. Looking again so is your DHCP server.

This is a WINS issue, not DNS. You are resolving a NetBIOS name to an IP address, not a Fully Qualified Domain Name, which is DNS. Your WINS server is on a different network. You need a server to act as a relay agent to forward NetBIOS broadcasts from your LAN to your WINS server across the router. Broadcasts don't cross routers.

If the IP Address of your printer were not dynamically assigned by your DHCP server then you could make use of an LMHOST file for the printer. You have two alternatives. (1) Staticly assign an IP address to the printer using a reserved IP address that is listed as reserved with the DHCP server so that it is not used in the dynamic assigning of addresses. You can then list the NetBIOS name and that IP address in an LMHOST file on your LAN. OR (2) Configure a server as a relay agent to forward NetBIOS broadcasts over the router to your WINS server which will keep track of a dynamicly assign IP address for your printer.
