Cannot Share Between 2 Computers

By BorgInva ·
I can share folders/files on each PC and they can see the files themselves (they see their own shares on the workgroup). I have a PC wired to a new, wireless router. A laptop connecting wireless.

I can access the main PC via Remote Desktop, VNC, VNC via http locally, and my website internally. All done via 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.1:5801, 192.168.1.1:1701. Still, neither PC will see each others shared folders. Both see the MSHOME workgroup, but not each other's shares.

All firewalls and AVs disabled. Main PC uses AVG FREE and Windows Firewall. Laptop uses Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security.

Both XP SP2. Home network. Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router.

Any tips or tricks?

Thanks.

when you say "see"

Do you mean the shares don't show up in the network places? Can you access the share if you type \\mainpc\sharename from the other PC?

Correct.

They do show up in their own network places, but not each others.

I tried the command prompt too but no help.

One of the problems with XP is the default share names that they are C$ D$ etc

These won't work normally, they are meant for administrative purposes, but never found out what that means.

I use "Create a New Share", name it something appropriate and give it whatever permissions you want.

Networking can be very simple, or a real pain in the proverbial.

To help further, we need a few more details.

How are you trying to network?
What protocols?
In what circumstances?
There are several other sticking points, any info you can give will help narrow it down.

last thought, have you tried NETBEUI? Although it is not "supported" by XP, it should be available on the installation disk.

Have you tried accessing the shares with IP address instead of host name? for instance \\192.168.1.1\sharename.

If you're able to do it this way it appears to be a name resolution problem

Shared A Bit

by BorgInva In reply to Cannot Share Between 2 Co ...

Not sure what I did yet but I got the computers to see each other now (probably for a short time). However, now copying files is an issue. The laptop to PC I get "cannot copy path too deep". From the PC to laptop, I get "path now invalid". What is going on?

I contacted Linksys but they said it is not their router. I have seen several postings elsewhere on routers causing the problems.

Now what? :-(

I can copy small files but once I pass 100M, I get one of those errors.
