Can't access 2nd HD on Win98 and wrong f

By mayon ·
I can't access my 2nd IDE HD on my 486/66mz Gateway. Also, the floppy drive, instead of 3.5 (1.44 type) it was 5 1/4 type. But, on Safe Mode,I can access the 2nd IDE drive and the floppy is still in 5 1/4 type.

Pls. help!

Your floppy drive type is probably incorrectly set in the computers CMOS settings. Check there first.

Hi,

I would check the CMOS to see if the Floppy Drive is set properly. To access the CMOS on most PC, just hit the del key after it reads your memory count.
If yours don,t access to CMOS by hitting the del key, your may have to check your motherboard manual.
You say that you can access your second Hard Drive in saft mode, but not in normal mode. Sounds to me there may be a conflict. After you boot up in normal mode, right click on MY Computer Icon, then select Properties and go to the Device Manager tab. Try to find if there are any devices taking IRQ 15, if so highlight the device that,s taking IRQ 15 and go to Properties then select the resourse tab. take the check make off where it says "Use automatic settings" and click on Interrupt Request where number 15 is beside it, click on the Change settings button. and select another IRQ that is avilable, if it allows you can do this, you will see in the conflict device list say if the is a conflict or not. If No ccnflict try that IRQ ..after it reboots

This won't help to your problem but read it:
Right click on My Computer Icon then Ptoperties, go to Performance ant then Floppy Disk. Uncheck it You (and all oters) really don't need Windows to check for new floppy every reboot :)) this check for floppy slows a little loading ant this is the second reason not to use it.

Two Problems here.
First the Hard Drive. Is the 2nd HD conected to the Primary or Secondary IDE port or is it SCSI. Assuming Secondary IDE Port, check that it is properly configured Control Panel | System | Device Manager | Hard Disk Controllerswhile in "normal" mode. Check Gateway's site for lastest driver and update the controller driver according. I suspect that something is conflict with the controller or Windows has incorrectly loaded the drivers for your second IDE port. More information is before I can give detailed information what the problem is. Since minimal drivers are loaded in the Safe Mode, the conflict either isn't present or Incorrect bus mastering driver for the controller isn't being loaded and, thus, the windows "sees" the drive.

Second the Floppy Drive. It is a CMOS problem. You must define it correctly in the CMOS. Windows uses what the BIOS (ie CMOS) says it is. I believe 486 Gateways used Phoenix BIOS. F2 on power up should drop you into the BIOS setup.

If you

Running Win98 on a 486 66 is really not recommended at all. Look at the requirements of the OS and your system and you will see that they don't come up to spec. Any further use might work but is not recommended. The machine is not Y2K compliant hardware wise unless you flash the BIOS. This is something you can hopefully still obtain from Gateways ftp site or home page. If you wish to continue, check the jumper settings on the second hard drive to make sure it is set as slave. The BIOS flash might fix your other problems with the floppy drive as well. But check jumper settings first and seriously consider getting a machine that meets the requirements of the OS.
