Can’t anyone step up to the challenge?

    Locked

    by sonicclang ·

I’m still looking for an answer to this question. I’ve been posting it on and off for months and no one is replying. Does no one know the answer?

From one user to another, e-mails are losing their formatting. I had thought it was only when e-mails go out through the internet, but that seems to be the only time they keep their formatting.

I just did a test from one computer to another in the same office and all the special text information is being lost. It’s being displayed as plain text, but in the Format menu, HTML is still checked. There must be a setting somewhere on the Exchange Server 5.5 program that is removing all the formatting.

    Please can anyone help?

Email format controlled at several places

      by stress junkie ·

In reply to Can’t anyone step up to the challenge?

Email client software like Outlook or work alikes can
control the format of email at several places. There is a
setting for default outgoing messages, default
incoming messages, and per user outgoing messages.
I’m not familiar with Exchange Server configuration but
you can check these places in the client software.

The email client software configuation applet will have
a default setting to be used for outgoing messages.
This will most likely allow either ‘Text only’ or ‘HTML’.

Then the client software default setting can be
overriden on a ‘per person’ basis. This can be seen and
set using the Address Book applet. Look at the
properties of each person listed in the address book.
There will be a setting of ‘Text only’ or ‘HTML’
      formatting for that particular user.

Lastly, the email client software can be set to ignore
formatting in incoming messages. This is back at the
email client configuration applet. If you send a
message in HTML format but the person reading the
message sees HTML code instead of the formatted page
then this is a probable cause. It’s also safer to
unformat incoming messages because you won’t run
Java code or open a web page just by reading a
      message.

There may be other possibilities for your symptoms but
these came to mind when I read your post.

It does appear that someone tried to use a plaintext default to minimize the risk of a virus or other malicious code being transmitted via e-mail. Unfortunately they garbled the settings.

        I will double check

        by sonicclang ·

In reply to Email format controlled at several places

I will double check all of those settings, although I’m fairly certain at this point I’ve checked them all. Both computers I was testing on this morning are set to HTML for outgoing mail. As far as I know my computer is not set up to strip off any special formatting. Intersting, I just received an e-mail from someone on our network at he used some special fonts and the formatting was not stripped off his e-mail.

Are there any known issues between Outlook 2000 and XP?

      Anyone think of fonts?

      by sonicclang ·

In reply to Can’t anyone step up to the challenge?

Did anyone think to ask if I have the correct fonts installed on my computer? I think that might be the problem. If the person creating an e-mail has a font you don’t have, you’re going to see that font in plain text. grr.

Wrong forum to post a question

      by oz_media ·

In reply to Can’t anyone step up to the challenge?

Well if you’ve been posting here and not getting answers, it is because this is not the Technical Q&A forum, which is the place to resolve technical issues. The discussion forum is just for discussing topics of interest not getting answers.

If you HAVE been postig in tech Q&A, you probably posted with a low point value that never attracted anyone to help resolve your issue.

Anyhow, I am not a Microsoft kinda guy so I have no solutions, but then again this isn’t a place to get solutions, so my comments are at least conversationally valid.

We have been workin gto get issues resolved such as gettng people to use the technical Q&A section where Tech Points are accumulated (oh yeah you haven’t earned any points from helping people here either have yuo).

give your head a shake and wehen you have SOME faint clue of what you are talking about, voice your opinion. Until that time, STFU!

YOU show me on the HOME page or entry to Duscussions page where it says this is a forum to have technical questions answered, it’s NOT, and that’s why you don’t get any help you idiot.

You actualy had the lack of brain power that when you had a question to ask, yuo skipped OVER the Technical Q&A link (DUH) and selected th Discussions link. So get bent until you have a clue, you are WRONG. THis is NOT a place for asking technical questions, it is for discussing topics not asking guestions, moron!

        Most posts here are technical

        by stress junkie ·

In reply to Wrong forum to post a question

Admitedly there is a ‘Technical Q & A’ forum. That said,
it’s clear that most of the discussions in this forum are
        technical or about IT careers.

I’ll tell you what I think is inappropriate. Some people
post a lot of political ‘discussions’. I think posts dealing
with the politics of The Congo or of Laos or wherever
have any place on TR. I think these people should take
their political debates to Yahoo! or Google or some
place that wants to host political discussions.

        • #2735712

What you newbies are now trying to change the TR layout?

          by oz_media ·

In reply to Most posts here are technical

The Discussion forum is NOT for posting questions, however people do it by mistake all the time, TR has not found a way to change the links on a style sheet yet. The purpose of technical Q&A is based on aquiring Tech Points for helping others, you will notice some of us have a 10K beside our name, others 5K etc. this is from HELPING people who post according to the site guidelines and being awarded point values depending on the questions answered.

You have MISPOSTED in the Discussion forum, which is open for discussion on ANY topic of choice and is definitely NOT limited to technical questions. In fact MOST discussions here are NON technical.

I have been floating around here for several years now, I think I understand the outline of the website, as we have also been asked several times on how to improve it. ONE regularly duiscussed issue that we have been trying to address for some time now is HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO POST QUESTIONS IN THE RIGHT FORUM!

For some reason, people such as yourself and your buddy who has misposted here, seem to not understand what Technical Q&A would mean, you then PASS that link and choose the one below it titled Discussions. How can you pass over a clearly labelled link and choose the wrong one below it? Don’t you guys have a kiddie chat room to be in right now?

Just to clarify for some of our challenged peers.

      by oz_media ·

In reply to Can’t anyone step up to the challenge?

      DISCUSSION FORUM ENTRY PAGE:
“You can start a conversation about any subject.”
Politics has been a very popular subject here, any are also STARTED by TR staff, so NO you are not right, back to the chat rooms with you.

      TECHNICAL Q&A:
“Join our community of IT pros in a free marketplace of questions and answers about technical, strategic, and career development issues”

Get it yet? Technical Q&A for asking and answering technical questions, you obtain points from helping people, which NEITHER OF YOU HAVE DONE yet you feel qualified to detail what this site is for??? What a nerve!
The idea was originally to get TR merchandise but they never cough up any goods around here so it’s only good for bragging rights. So that’s why people have a little blue 10K or 5K beside their names, we help people solve problems and discuss what we want in the meantime.

How dare you come here and start dictating who’s who and what’s what, you haven’t got a clue! people like you guys are here all the time, thuinking they know what’s going on but they rarely last long before either benig shot down in flames or kicked off for not playing by the rules.

        Greetings and felicitations dear Oz.

Of course you’re absolutely right. There’s no question
about it. You hit the nail on the head. Your aim is true.
        You are The Man.

        Oh. By the way:

The link for Technical Q & A is below the link for
Discussions. Your response to my previous post said
that it was above the Discussions link. It isn’t.
Discussions is above Technical Q & A. Small point.

Interesting quote in the post that I’m replying to here.
You quote the entry page to Discussions, but you
skipped right past several sentences to find the one
sentence which, taken out of context, appears to
support your claim. Did you read the two sentences
prior to the one that you quoted? They read as follows:
“Join converstations with other TechRepublic members
about anything from desktop application support to
shopping for an ASP.” That range doesn’t seem to
include Canadian politics. I’m sure that I must be
        misreading it.

On the same entry page we see listed a series of
subject groups. These are “Network Administrator”,
        “Security”, “Client Support”, “Certification”, “Career”,
        “Management”, “Miscellaneous”, and “General
Technology”. Now one might argue that Canadian
politics fits neatly into the “Miscellaneous” subject
group. However, that doesn’t hold much water when
taken in context with the other subject groups. Again,
I’m sure that the misperception is mine.

There’s no question that my account doesn’t have any
points. Oh dear! Oh dear! Oh dear! You got me fair and
        square. And rightly so.

One of my previous posts notes that most of the
discussions are either technical questions or are IT
career related. That is a simple fact that is easily
verified. It must be a paradox that I’m too stupid to
        perceive.

I am humbled by your greatness. I am not worthy. I
am no more than a fly on your dung pile. I admit all of
that. I cannot refute that which is so obviously true. I
would be honored if I may make one suggestion. I
suggest that you take your medicine every single day,
not just once in a while. It won’t work if you don’t take
        it every day.

        Bless you dear Oz.

before you level personal criticisms at one of the principal contributors to both Technical Q & A, technical “miscellaneous” discussions and non-technical “miscellaneous” discussions.

Yes, you are right — most recent discussions in the miscellaneous category have been about technical or employment issues. But if you had been around for the past year or so, you would quickly see that a greater proportion of the more popular discussions in the category have been non-technical.

In case you are too dumb to realise it, with the ever increasing violence in Iraq, political discussions have been avoided for some time as it is a touchy subject for Americans, who comprise most of the contributors to this website.

and manners have been a struggle for me to master.
Perhaps if I read more of your posts I will begin to
          understand these concepts.

You are correct postulating that I am too stupid to
understand the intricacies of this sort of activity. I have
accomplished nothing more than to expose my own
ignorance. I hereby recant and abjure all of my
previous heresies. I should, no doubt, be burned at the
stake. Surely this is the only hope for the salvation of
          my immortal soul.

I see by your profile that you were born in 1941. You
are an elder and your counsel is wise. I only hope that
I will be as wise and courteous when I am as old. I
sincerely hope that you are not troubled by your
advanced age. Some people might say that, for you,
life is over and that you are just running out the clock
with nothing but the grim spectre of the grave in your
future. Don’t let that kind of talk trouble you. I say
“Sieze the day”. Don’t stay huddled in your mom’s
basement. Get outside into the sunshine. Try to find
something to live for, as difficult as that might be at
your age. Don’t take on any long term projects,
          though.

I suppose that I can understand someone of your age
being a bit grumpy from time to time, as your post
would seem to indicate that you are. Believe me when I
say that I’d probably be grumpy too if I felt the sharp
edge of Death’s scythe at my throat every day. That
must be the reason that you’ve reverted to the
personality of a very naughty 8 year old. It’s
understandable and I don’t hold it against you. I’m
sure that you were once a positive influence on the
          world around you.

I sincerely hope that both you and Oz_media will soon
find the peace of mind that so obviously eludes you. In
your case, of course, that had better happen soon if it

I am a mere youngster at only 35, the majority of TR’s peers are much more experienced and (sorry guys) older than I am. In fact, it is the wealth of experience here and the AGE of the members that make it a better resource than most.

Had the question been posted properly in the first place, it would have been answered, resolved and everyone would move on. When someone points out that this is NOT the right place, and newbies try and argue the point, it will stir some conflict from TR peers. How could you not see this as a new member?

But you should respect those who can help you and are willing to help you if not just for the respect of the site owners who have built a place for you to get help. there are channels to get help, think about them and slect the appropriate one, is it really so difficult that your sarcastic and longwinded (yet immature) answers are warranted?

Well it’s about time you got on the same page. The reason I skipped the forst sentence (no it didn’t take it out of context in anyway, look up context)was because YES we can discuss anything, it says nothing about asking or solving problems or questions.

the links, well you are right and I apologize perfusely, they have recently MOVED the links as we have begged for many months now to try and get this issue resolved.

Yes we have had you EXACT same little point raised here many times, TR staff has reiterated , the two are separate parts of TR and this is a discussion forum open for discussions on ANYTHING. IN fact the editor of Tech Pro Guild JUST posted (last week I think) a enw topic introducing the forum to TPG members as a place to tsalk about ANYTHING, whether IT, hockey, politics etc. there was no mention of having yoru personal computing issues resopved by peers. they created a Technical Q&A section for that, and as you have noticed the link yourself, what made you think that it wasn’t the right place to ask a Tecnical Q?

It’s not brain surgery, it’s not miniscule fine print it is a link for you t oget help. Have you noticed that the ONLY discussion with any form of activity are not those with questions posted? MOST questions in the Discussion forum go completely unanswered, people start to say things like:

“Can’t anyone step up to the challenge?
I’m still looking for an answer to this question. I’ve been posting it on and off for months and no one is replying. Does no one know the answer?”

Wel months and month and someone keeps posting without thinking for a second that Technical Q&A MAY just be the place for a TECHNICAL Question? Do you actually feed yourself and go to the bathroom unattended?

          by stress junkie ·

In reply to While I agree…

I was having trouble finding my own posts too. They
don’t seem to be updating the ‘My Discussions’ page
for the ‘Participated In’ portion. I did two things; both
worked. First I sent a couple of messages to TR support
describing the problem. After I sent the second one I
started receiving email every time I entered a post
showing the URL to that discussion. The other thing
that I did was to subscribe to each discussion to which
I had posted. These seem to be showing up on the ‘My
Discussions’ page. I have to believe that the emails are
being automatically generated when I post a comment.
I don’t know how to turn that on without the help of TR
support, though. I’ve looked all over the ‘My Account’
and ‘My Discussions’ pages. There isn’t any box to
check for this as far as I can see.

I sent the messages to TR support by going to ‘My
Account’, then click on the FAQ link. At the bottom of
that page is a link to send a message to TR.

It seems that ever since TR started using the Jive Software, all hell broke loose. They have been changing th esite bit by bit, but there are still some older features that don’t work.

It used to be that all of your recent discussion were kept in top 10 order on the My Discussions page, if one was updated by a new post, it would take the top priority in the list All you had to do was go to MY Discussions and you could see if there are any updates, without inundating yourself with all the extra email, I get enough email thanks.

In reply to While I agree…

You actually have to subscribe to a discussion to keep it listed, wheras it used to be that anything you participated in was kept current by the most recent posted comment. This is also a peeve of mine too.

The issue here isn’t that someone posted to Miscellaneous instead of Net Admin or something, it is that this is yet another person postng a Technical Question in teh Discussion forum instead of the Tech Q&A section. We have been over this SO many times it makes the brain hurt!

When someone says it is a mispost, these two newbies start running off at the mouth that the wuestion is more apporpriate in a discussion forum than a political discussion, which you know is what fuels TR these days.

they are simply wrong, made a simple mistake that many make but couldn’t accept that it was called wrong.

the poster was complaining about not having responses and asked if anyone was going to step up to the challenge, as if he had the answer to something and wanted to see if anyone else did.

If this person had thought for HALF a second, he would have realized that “GEE, my question isn’t getting answered, what’s this Technical Q&A section all about, did I perhaps post in the wrong place?”

No, personal predjudice clouded judgement and the flames begin, with yet another newbie supporting the madness.

          Soe people’s kiddies!

In reply to Yes I know

I’m really sick of your elitist attitude towards everyone who knows less than you. I’ve only been visiting this site on and off for a couple months, and only posted a couple times. I’ve been using forums now for probably 4 or 5 years to get questions answered, and in those years I have come across many many forums where people just don’t post responses. Take for instance Rockwell Software. I don’t know if you know them, but they’re a HUGE company. They’re the leaders in HMI software and PLC hardware. You’d think their forums would get some traffic, but they don’t. People post questions there without receiving an answer for a good year or so. And they don’t e-mail you when you finally do receive a post, so you might not even see that someone posted an answer for 6 months after that. When all is said and done you might not GET an answer for a year and a half… and that HAS HAPPENED TO ME. Sickening that Rockwell Software wouldn’t employ a couple people to watch over the forums and answer these questions. So please bare with me here, when you’re new to a forum you don’t know what level of traffic your question will receive.

As for the title of “stepping up to the challange”, I have also observed that people do not even look at questions when they have boring titles. If someone posts a question with the title, “Help!” it will get hundreds of posts. Whereas a question with the title, “my inbox is acting strange…” will get no traffic. An interesting title makes you check out the post. If the title doesn’t intrigue you, you will simply pass it by. So I appologize for my hands waving in the air trying to grab people’s attention. I realize now I posted in the wrong place and have since corrected that.

When it comes down to it Oz, I’m new here, I may not know much right now about TR, but I’ll learn and will be knowledgable in no time. But you, you will always be an ass hole.

In reply to One more thing Oz…

then you completely diminished a very sinsible post by finishing up with yuor usuall name calling.

Here again is the exact meassage that I used when first replying to your post. I am a little snotty but no more than in yor repost where you say you have been posting for months and still no answers while asking people to step up to the challenge.

We have had people misposting, usually new members such as yourself, and a simple mention to use the other foum has always been enough, I didn’t even notice your alias until your responded to my points.

generally people wil say something like “Oops sorry, I will respost in the corrrect forum”.

          In your case, this is your reply;
“WTF??? Not a technical forum? How did this get posted here then?

Oz, I should have known you were a mac kinda guy, being the liberal you are liberals always seem to think macs are sooooo much better and are always snobby about them”

So who here is being an asshole?

I merely pointed out that your sry for help was falling on deaf ears, this is NOT a place to get questions answered, you being the all knowing and correct person, layghed at the comment and stated that this IS the right place to post! Then someone else even agreed with you and stated that POLITICAL discussions didn’t belong. Whereas you are both wrong.

So unlike the rest of the THOUSANDS who have misposted here, realized their mistake and then reposted in the correct place, you decided you were correct, you understood the forum and I was in the wrong, which you should realize by now that I am not, this is not a place to get answers to technical questions.

When you and your buddy start to get snotty, what do you actually expect in response from someone who actually DOES know how this website works?

Think again, YOU are in the wrong, YOU wouldn’t step back gracefully and repost, YOU insisted I was wrong and now you are calling ME an asshole for what YOU did wrong??

Time to give your head a shake. Repost, you will get a HOARD more relevant answers, most of the people that are active Q&A helpers no longer post in Discussions, it’s too full of more questions. THESE people WILL help if you post to Q&A.

Good luck and stop giving people shit for your errors.

          Forgot to add my FIRST

          by oz_media ·

In reply to Well I almost agreed

forgot to add my first reply to which you took such offense and started name calling.

          Here is what I said:
“Wrong forum to post a question
Well if you’ve been posting here and not getting answers, it is because this is not the Technical Q&A forum, which is the place to resolve technical issues. The discussion forum is just for discussing topics of interest not getting answers.

If you HAVE been postig in tech Q&A, you probably posted with a low point value that never attracted anyone to help resolve your issue.

Anyhow, I am not a Microsoft kinda guy so I have no solutions, but then again this isn’t a place to get solutions, so my comments are at least conversationally valid.”

Now please show me exactly what sentence or word in that statement that you took so offensively?

          Finished?
OK, here’s your reply to THAT (my initial statement):

          “Well then…
WTF??? Not a technical forum? How did this get posted here then?

Oz, I should have known you were a mac kinda guy, being the liberal you are liberals always seem to think macs are sooooo much better and are always snobby about them”

How now lokoing at my initial statement AND yoru reply, who was being the Arsehole? Who was calling the other names or insinuating incorrect conclusions? I am neither Liberal NOR a Mac user.

To open a reply with WTF? is to instantly begin the slinging match. I used neither profanity,. condensed profanity or even abbreviated profanity. I never said you were a typical Windoze user, I never said anything about your political stand, I never said anything other than you would get more help by posting to the correct forum.

You tool it from there, so think again before you start calling people A**hole.

          OOOOOOOKAAAAAAAAY

          by sonicclang ·

In reply to Well I almost agreed

Dude, do you need more smilies after a post to see someone is joking?? You correctly quoted my first post except you left out the frigen smilies. What, next time I wanna give you a friendly elbow to the shoulder do I need to include 6 smilies? Isn’t 4 enough? Here 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 I even included the smilie with the teeth to show I’m REALLY joking around. I was posting that with all the smilies because I figured we could let bygones be bygones after the discussions we were having about that UN article. I was actually trying to be friendly but you of course assumed I was calling you a name or whatever. The “liberal” comment was a throwback to that UN discussion as well, I thought we could joke around about our differences. …guess not.

As for the “WTF? line, I wasn’t directing that at you, get over yourself. And I never took offense to you correcting me about where to post. I was directing that at the air because I was confused about how I posted in the the incorrect location. That issue has been taken care of as you can see by my other posts. Really… you can stop acting like I still don’t understand where to post… please… I figured it out bud. I never thought you were wrong, or even said you were wrong for that matter. Within 5 minutes of reading your post I had my question posted in the correct spot. I thank you for pointing my mistake out to me, I would have been clueless otherwise (really, I’m not joking, I really wouldn’t have figured it out anytime soon).

Now I want you to find every post I’ve ever made and find exactly where I’ve called you a name. And “liberal” doesn’t count because you are, and you can’t take offense to that. From what I remember in that UN discussion you were throwing around a lot of name calling. When I first joined the party I thought you were being a little bit of a jerk. If I’ve thrown any names at you or anyone else you can call me a liar, but I do believe this was my first.

          Fair enough then Brian

I can acept an eloquent answer such as what you have just provided.

The problem on TR is that some of us have a history in these arguments and the old stuff (already resolved or dropped) keeps getting brought up by new peers. This is frustrating at the very least as it causes one to back up and reiterate his/her stand over the past few years.

I live in Western Canada, we have very few Liberal supporters here, I anm not one of them either and did not vote for the Liberal party. Therefore I am NOT a Liberal as you seem to imply. Now perhaps by AMERICXAN political standards you could see that I support what you see as Liberal views, as a Canadian , I stand behind VERY little of what the liberal government (IN BC that is) has done under our current leadership. Our dude was nailed for drunk driving almost as soon as he was in office, he has cut back on too many needed and wel established ad supported services, th eLiberal government has a lot of money go missing or unaccounted for etc.

Now our Conservative Liberal government back East and our Liberal government our West are completely different in the way they act. Out West they are despised, but on a whole, the National Liberal government isn’t so bad.

Either way, they are ALL a bunch of lying crooks who sit in their office and push paper at the expense of Canada, you can’t win in politics, you just have to shrug it off and pretend they don’t exist, then magically they don’t.

We don’t place such an importance on the Canadian government as you do for the american presidency, we know nobody is really any better than the other and just ignore the government as it rarely plays a ajor role in our lives, such as going to war.

But as far as misreading your post, yes I must have arrived at the wrong conclusion about your comments, I can call someone an Arsehole while laughing and mean it.

So as you say, lets move on and start again.

Welcome to TR, I see you have reposted, you had some time ago but for somereason, not only yourself, I was still in a major feud about what belongs and what doesn’t with someone as new as yourself that was tying to take a stand. Well from our first encounter you can see I just don’t take that crap. I am strong willed and stick up for myself, which I expect anyone to do when challenged.

Have fun, good luck withyour dilemma, as i said, I am not an Microsoft guy, I do have some MS boxes at home for remote networking to client sites but for the most part, I am a Novell Linux and Netware guy. I think it pays better and is more stable than MS choices.

I didn’t think I was being THAT assertive as a new guy in town, but hey, maybe I was. I guess I too stick up for what I believe. It’s the ones who believe in something that rule the world you know, so we’re not too much different from one another.

          See you around.

Just so you guys know, as soon as I realized I posted my question in the wrong place I found the Technical Q&A section of the site and posted my question over there. Look for it, it’s called “E-mail is being converted to plain text.”

I had no idea my post had created such a buzz. When I looked at it about 10 minutes ago I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me when I saw 20 something posts. What?? Ok, looks as though you guys took it and ran with it. That’s cool. Maybe it will attract someone who can answer my question, which has still not been resolved.

I still think Oz needs to chill out 😀

      Thanks guys,
      -Brian
