cant boot up my computer

By egertge ·
my computer starts up and gives an error message: Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key.
i cannot get a windows 98 boot disk to work, which is what the computer has, but i can get a windows ME boot disk to work. the message :Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:WINDOW\COMMAND.COM) comes up, but no command i enter works. i also cannot get my windows 98 cd to boot on startup, it says failure. i can get a windows ME cd to work though, it goes through all of the pre instalation stuff, but when it comes time to copy files, it wont let me, probably because the ME cd is made for a dell. i have no clue what else to try. thanks for any suggestions u might have.

If the operating system is windows 98
Insert the startup disk in floppy drive and boot computer, choose to run setup without cd-rom support

At the command prompt type FDISK /MBR
reboot computer with disk in floppy drive,at the command prompt type SYS C:,this should reinstall the W98 system files,if you have changed the configuration of which drive to boot from in the bios,go back and set the configuration to hard drive first.

The Dell disk is possible a restore diskused for the compter that it was setup with and may not recognize the system configuration

it never goes to the option of run setup with or without cd-rom support. it is stuck on the Type the name of the commande interpreter A>. i can get into the boot from hard disk or boot from cd rom option, but if i chose hard disk, it takes my back to the type the name.........page, and if i choose cd-rom, i cant install the ME version, and the 98 cd wont work

As your computer boots up look for press del, f10 or some such command. When your in setup look for IDE devices or something like that. Go into that area and see if your computer sees your hard drive. If not set it to auto and reboot. Also try a virus scan boot disk, some virus will over write the boot sector.

If you are refering to the Windows 98 boot floppy, it sounds like your W98 boot disk is corrupt.

Most of the W98 install CDs are not bootable disks.

To create a boot floppy, place a blank floppy in the drive, and go to add/remove programs in control panel. Click on the boot disk tab.

If you need a W98 boot disk, and do not have a running PC with W98 installed, you can download the files from www.bootdisk.com

Then, make sure that your boot sequence in BIOS settings is set to include the floppy drive in the boot device list.

Boot from the floppy, have the windows 98 cd in the drive, and type setup from the command prompt. You should be off and running.

Make sure that you have the latest drivers for all of your hardware on hand.

My2 cents

If you need a fresh 98 boot disk, goto www.bootdisk.com and downloead it.
Also, if you can boot off a Me CD-Rom, but not 98. I would check for scratches, or thumb prints on the bottom. Another thing you may try is to reset the computer defaults in the bios. But please write down the processor information if you had to manually type in that ! Hope this helps
