Cant change settings in win 98

By huboldium ·
yesterday my computer running windows 98 froze, when i restarted i discovered it had wiped my mouse drivers and who knows what else, also it changed my display settings to 16 color and the screen area to 640x481 pixels which makes for annoying and hard viewing, when i try to change them it demands that i restart, after restarting i find that no changes have been made at all, please help as the 16 colors and tiny screen make for hard use.
Thankyou
Houston

Cant change settings in win 98

I had the same problem, My machine turned out to have been freezing due to a bad vid card, It was a top of the line asus gforce2 and would happen intermitenly. After searching for the problem I found other users were having the same differculty for different reasons, but having the same hardware as mine
1, In your bios if you are using a AGP card, make sure it is set to AGP, sometimes they are set up to PCI thru there own setup program and cause your machine to freeze.
2. Check to see if fastwrite is enabled, and check your card specs to see if this is supported. Online if you don't have the book.
Hope one of these helps, post more info on your machine and hardware if neither of these seem to be it. Also depending on your video card or motherboard, you can check the power being supplied to your components either in the bios screen or a program such as Asus's smart doctor in the task bar which would also raise havoc if it is inconsistent.
As i said mine this this exact same thing and would not allow me to change the setting and other times it would bootup and be perfect only to freeze later and come back stupid!!!As if it had the wrong drivers.

Make sure you have your Video drivers, then goto the Control Panel, Open System, Click the Device manager tab. Remove the Display Adapter and any mouse drivers. Also check for any Unknown devices, Remove them then reboot. Windows should find the hardware and install the drivers...
Good Luck!!!

This is more of a Win95 problem but it can also happen in 98. Is your graphics card integrated with the motherbaord or do you hve a PCI card? Check. Quite often the OS will loose drivers. Check your device through Control panel > System and see if the drivers have been lost, as it looks as though the OS has returned to basic settings.

The usual senario is that there is an integrated card and then another PCI card has also been installed, this causes a conflict if the settings have not been done as they should. If all else fails remove the device and then reinstall it using hardware wizard etc.

jmoore was right, but he overlooked one thing. Do as he recommends, but do it in Safe Mode and be sure to remove all the monitors. The problem you describe is most commonly associated with multiple monitors in the device manager and the system not being able to decide what is a safe refresh rate so it stays in vga.
