can't defrag

By warrenL ·
I use win98SE, and suddenly can not complete the defrag operation. I have let in run for over nine hours and it shows no percent of completion, and just keeps running.

Any ideas are welcome

Thanks,

Warren

Did you turn the swap file off befre attempting to defrag?

If you have not already done so, run Scandisk on the drive and try to defrag again. Of course, be sure you have a current backup before either of these two steps.

Another helpful hint. Always run Defrag in safe mode. If you don't, it likely will just keep restarting and never complete

willcomp is right, but i would also like to add that after i see that problem in the field, i ususally have to run it a couple of times to get it to go all the way through.

sounds hung. what has changed? did you add new software? defragging in safe mode should work better...
another guess is that you are running out of free hard disk space. how much ya got? can you delete temporary internet files, other Disk Cleanup chores first?
