Can't get login to work

By Old Dog ·
Removed Novell Client from Win2000, left MS client in place. tried to reboot. Now I get the message "A network service failed to start. Please check your bootlog for details. Would you still like to logon to Windows 2000? When I select yes, I get another login screen. After I enter a password I get a message "Winlog has generated errors, the system will restart", or words to that effect, and then the computer goes into a limbo state. Is there any way to recover from this so the applications anddata are still intact?

Uninstall your services (file sharing) then your clients then the protocols. Then reboot. Reconfigure your networking protocol then the client and finally any services.
I am guessing but I think you may have a binding problem but you may have a bad uninstall of the novell client. Uninstalling down to the adapter and reinstalling should resolve any binding and installation issues.

When I boot into safe mode, the only thing I can do, there are no icons in the network configuration screen, and the option to add them is grayed out. Is there any other way to get to a bootable system?

Try "Last Known Good Configuration". When you reboot and the "Please select the operating system to start" message shows, hit F8 to get to the advanced startup options. That will let you boot with the Last Known Good, which, since it hasn't bootedsuccessfully since you uninstalled the Novell Client, should be a saved configuration from before you made the change. Then you should be able to do the uninstall/reinstall as the other post suggested.

Remove the Network card from Device manager. This should also remove all networking protocols. After rebooting, the system should reload all the necessary drivers and protocols.

Thanks for the suggestion, but, as I mentioned before, there are no devices, clients, protocols, or anything else in the network properties. I should have metioned, this is a laptop, and all devices are integral.

when you log in, do you log into a domain or the local workstation?

Also, if you check in the event viewer, what is the service that fails?

Thanks to everybody for all their help. I finally gave up, reinstalled Win2000, reinstalled all drivers and applications. Everything is working now. I am closing this question.
