Can't install any software or upgrades

By excalibu7 ·
What is the problem when upon trying to install any software [fresh out of the box] (everything from Basic Quicken to Mcafee Virus Scan) that when the software installation screen appears, the STOP[X] sign window appears saying "you have performed an illegal operation and this program will shut down..."??? This window's menu bar always reads [INS 0432]. Everything freezes until I hit the enter key [close] which closes the X window any running programs. Is my hardrive screwed or what?

Which OS are you using?

Essentially, you should ALWAYS disable anti-virus software before installing anything new. Active AV software will read changes being made and cause problems with software installed after the AV software.

If you are running Win2000/WinXP, boot to the Recovery Console and run a chkdsk /r at the DOS prompt. Hopefully it will find and fix any software corruption issues. But if you still have problems afterward, then I recommend that you start over with a bootdisk and fdisk.

Pretty much the same with Win95,98,Me etc. Run a scandisk and fix errors. Test and see if the problem occurs. You may also try reinstalling these OSes on top of the current installation, but that may not work. Starting over witha bootdisk and fdisk is usually the best route.
