Cant install from CDROM

By rar ·
Here's a weird one!
A Win98 (1st ed) user is having trouble installing Norton Systemworks from the original CD. Message comes up "Cannot find file F:\NCDSTART.EXE. Make sure path/file are correct.....", but I'm looking right at it in Explorer. I can also see it in a DOS box but get "Bad Command or file name" when trying to start. One clue is that Explr properties shows a length of zero while the DOS dir shows about 430K. The README.TXT file on the CD shows similar results but Notepad can readthe .INFs in the same direcotry OK!!! I tried to XCOPY to C: and it copied a few files and then hung at the EXE. We've done many CD installs on this machine and this CD installs fine on other machines. We have zero problems with all other applications on this machine so I dont think its a virus. Could Explorer have an internal path problem? just guessing. HELP!!!

Have you installed from this CD *lately*? It could just be a dirty CD. Just a thought. If that ain't it, wait for other answers.

We're you able to see it if you clicked START -? RUN, then browse for it?

How about if you use WINFILE...can you see a difference then?

I've seen this problem where a CD and the CD drive were just far enough out of tolerance in the opposite direction that data reads were unreliable. Sometimes a good cleaning of the disk gets you going but....

This is more common with CDs made from low-end CD-RW drives but I've seen it a few times with commercially produced disks. The long-term fix is usually to swap out the drive.

After further investigation, the problem is not the CD-ROM hardware but long file names. This machine will read short names OK but when installing via setup it cant find long names. Win Explr shows long names truncated at 8 (no ~ abbreviations) anda DOS DIR shows the 8.3 format with no full name on the right side of the line. I am going to post another question. Thanks for trying.

This may be a virus and you can check by running norton antivirus and then run scan disk to fix any errors.this is a long shot but it may be.

I got exactly the same situation with my Office 2000 discs. My problem was solutioned opening a MSDOS box, reading the CD on the MSDOS box (trying many times, Retry... Retry..), the finally, when MSDOS readed the DISC I switched to Explorer and there's my Office Disc ready to be used. My final toughts is that you, as I have to, must change the CD disc. Sometimes, it could help, changing the CDROM drive itself (I can't afford this!) when an important CD disc can't be readed)
