Can't Join Domain

By a_tank ·
I have Compaq Presario laptop with a built in Ethernet adapter. I have configured it to use DHCP from our NT server. From the server, I can see the laptop in user manager, and network neighborhood, and can ping its given IP from the server. However the laptop cannot ping the server. When I try to log on, it says "there is no domain available to validate your password". When I run winipcfg, it lists all of our DHCP servers etc. However the MAC address for the card is "FFFFFFFFFFF". Isn't that just a broadcast address? I have to assume that the right drivers are installed for the on board Ethernet adapter(Intel), because Compaq Tech Support told me they don't know the specific brand of card installed on this laptop. Any Help would be appreciated

Do you have the domain entered in the client properties? I am assuming you are using client for microsoft networks. Make sure you can ping the laptop address from the laptop. I would see if compaq has updated drivers on their website. Do you have Wins enabled? Also are you using a DNS configuration. Try disabling DNS if you have is enabled. I hope this helps some.

Sounds like the card is running in "promiscuous" mode. Are you running any monitoring software?

The card may also be bad. I have seen one do this before. Try a different adapter.

Try installing the Intel EtherExpress driver for the onboard ethernet. After this the network should start working normally.
