Can't see shared CD drives

By pams ·
We have a few shared CD drives (one on an Ethernet computer and another on a Token Ring computer) that we were always able to see across the network. We used them for installing software from CD's on user machines (depending if they had an Ethernet or Token Ring connection), that did not have their own CD drives. Recently when we tried to access a shared drive, we discovered that the drives are no longer visible in Network Neighborhood as they once were. These drives are still listed as shared devices and users can access files and printers across the network just fine. Is there something that someone might suggest we look for in troubleshooting this problem.

Can't see shared CD drives

A couple simple things that have popped into my head since you haven't mentioned them here: Check to make sure that the PCs sharing the drives are still within the same workgroup or vlan. Workgroups can get changed very easy, maybe its a glitch somewhere. Whether you have multiple Virtual LANS (VLANs) set up or not, a change in the Subnet Mask (255.255.255.0 or whatever) can throw things off as well. If you have user management set up on a server, maybe the permissions for the drives are set incorrectly. Also check to see if the shared name is different some how. Adding a $ can make them hidden.

Its usually the simple things that catch you in a bind and is generally something you overlook. Just cover your tracks, and even recreate the shares after deleting and rebooting.

Hope this helps!
