What is a good area to specialize with, Oracle or Cisco Networking? I'm planning to study on these areas but I don't know if there will be a demand for them on the near future. I'm in Canada.

Large databases and networks will both be around for a long time to come. With Oracle, you will probably be limited to fairly large organizations. Have you given any thought to what you would rather do -- be a database administrator (DBA) or a network engineer?

Just some food for thought. . .

DBA vs. Network

by vincepinpin In reply to Career path

Thank you for replying. By profession, I'm a business analyst but when I moved in Canada, my experiences and education were not recognized by the system and the private companies. I'm currently employed at IBM thru an agency as Helpdesk. I believe that I don't have any future on my position especially if the agency will not release me to venture on other position within the company. Are you telling me that being a network engineer has more demand than DBA due to limition on large companies? I just need advises from people on the IT industry coz you know better than I do.

DBA vs Network Engineer

by Info-Safety, LLC In reply to DBA vs. Network

Just about every company has a network (though not necessarily using Cisco equipment), but certainly not every company has an Oracle (or other enterprise class) database. Logically, it follows that there is a lot more demand for network engineers. Keep in mind, however, that Oracle DBAs are in demand, and there are not that many people out there with the necessary skills and training to do this job.

I hope this helps.

Take a look

by dspeacock In reply to DBA vs Network Engineer

at the various job boards out there and see what skills are in demand. There's a demand for Cisco, SAP, Oracle, all sorts of MS network type positions. Look around, see what's in your area and go from there.
