    Categorisation of Business Analysts

    Locked

    by zandizungu ·

hey guys,I am new to this website. My name is Zandi Zungu, I am an IT business analyst.I?m conducting a masters level survey on the categorization of business Analysts and would like to know from business analysts, employers of BAs, project managers and anyone interested if it is feasible to categorize BAs just like engineers according to various disciplines like civil engineer, electrical engineer etc. Will such a categorization add any value to prospective employers? Can this categorization also help Business Analyst hone down on what is expected of them in their roles? What other benefits can be enjoyed with categorization? Your Feed-back will be highly appreciated. Kind RegardsZandi

..as engineering disciplines. Engineers are a highly regulated profession with entrance requirements(education), standards etc. Anyone can call themsleves a business analyst.

And to add to that, businesses often have very different perseptions of what the role of the business analyst is. In some organizations they are someone with an IT background who works inbetween the design team and the customers. In others, its someone from the customers organization who works with IT.

aye, but a good business analyst is worth their weight in gold if you can find one.

I’ve worked with some very highly paid business analysts who seemed to know very little about either IT or the business.

Just about every single business analyst where I work is a friggin’ idiot! He/she wouldn’t know an air conditioner from a server if their life depended on it – but they sure like to play IT innovator.

Many believe it is feasible to categorize BAs

Yeap, it looks like it makes sense to categorize BAs to ensure that they have a good grasp of the business, when recruiting for the finacial services sector, be specific on what experience the prospective BA.

Business Analysts can have or not have IT background.Generally the people who do such work is a technical person who has had programming exp. but now as the business complexities increase and as more professionalism is expected we now see functional consultants. These are people who have worked in the specific industry and have domain experience. They help a lot in understanding the exact business requirements which is the key to successful project completion. Now we also have something called Hybrid analyst who has IT exp. as well as Domain exp.
Different companies percieve Business analyst differently. And its better to have an analyst with specific domain knowledge if the project involve complexity. So I think it does makes sense to categorise them.
