CBT Training for Certs - Anyone had luck with...

By TravisFx ·
Hi - Am considering doing some training, hopefully certification if time allows thru some form of CBT. I have 10 years as a lan admin, general support but no cert.
I've heard good thing about cbtnuggets.com. Very reasonable prices on CCNA, Linux+ and more. But I'm wondering can a 3 or $400 course really deliver enough and be good enough for cert? Anyone else heve experience? Or has anyone had success with any CD movie, video based material?
Thanks.

CBT Nuggets

by sal2k3 In reply to CBT Training for Certs - ...

Hello

CBTnuggets is a good resource to learn about certification objectives. But you need not buy it for money it is available for free in many p2p networks, bit torrent websites, etc ...

CCNA by CBTnuggets.com comes in 4 or 5 CD's and the trainer is pretty good. But he claims to be a geek I don't know what he means by that as I've not seen any geek who call's himself a geek. Well as you have pretty good experience and exposure to network administration you won't have any problem understanding the cbt's.

The best CBT for learning different flavours for linux and preparing for exams like linux+, RHCE is the www.linuxcbt.net It starts from scratch and covers all the topics for every version of linux the cbt is made for but it is pretty expensive. Your money is worth for it though.

When you are going for CBT's some e-learning have done well for specific titles. As I've mentioned above do take up some reviews before you put your money on any product ....

CBT/Online training

by pbrockert In reply to CBT Training for Certs - ...

I have recently tested (and passed) a couple of certification exams that were trained for completely by using CBT downloaded from a website. It was all Java based. I found that one issue was that doing the training on-line was better than downloading it because they would update the site fairly regularly with new content. The other item is that they have mentors available to answer questions 24/7 via chat. The downside is that the actual test questions bore very little similiarity to the test prep the site provided. The information was covered in their "classroom" area, but I may have done better to have bought a book and just read. The best thing to do is to test in an area you work in so that you are familiar with the system. Don't take a systems administrator cert test if you don't have access to the admin password, or a Linux test if you don't work at a Linux machine daily.

Best of luck.

Passing a test or learning the material

by gary.nowels In reply to CBT/Online training

What I have found in training is that I have two goals. 1st and foremost is to learn the material. If the material does not apply to my everday needs in the real world, then I have know interest in "the" certifications. 2nd is to pass the certification exams, and IF I have the material down pat, not transcender pat, not accessment pat, but down to where I really, really know it. Well, then the certification exam people will "really, really like me."
