CD drive won't detect CD's

By lee_colmer ·
Several of the PC's on our small office network have developed the same problem; the CD drive is listed as working properly but won't detect or open any CD.

I've checked for viruses and we haven't installed any new hardware or software. Any ideas??

thanks!

Does the CD spin up when inserted?

If so, it is possible that the laser lens is dirty. Try a name brand CD lens cleaner.
DO NOT use a lens cleaner on a CD-RW drive!

If it is a dirty lens, you have a case ventilation problem.
Add a case inlet fan so that you have positive airflow into the case.

If the disk does not spin at all, it is likely a hardware issue with the drives themselves.

On the software side, the primary thing to check is that the correct IDE drivers are installed.

When you say any CD, are we talking Standard cd's or CDR's / CDRW's

We had a situation here where a user said she was trying loads of cd's only to find they were all cdrw's and the drive couldnt read them.
