CD/DVD ROM not showing in Device Manager
Lockedby steven.cottom · about 15 years, 11 months ago
Hi,
I’m having problems installing a DVD-RW.
I uninstalled it from device manager, rebooted my computer then as i went back into device manager to reinstall the driver the option for CD/DVD isnt there!?
I have tried to install by going to add new hardware but again the option for CD / DVD is not in the list of devices?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

What was the original reason for uninstalling though …

What was happening that made you uninstall it?
How was the optical drive behaving before you shutdown?
Also – make and model of computer AND which operating system are you running with?

Moving HDD to new Mother board

Its a long story!
The drive was working fine, I transferred one hard drive with Windows XP installed into a different computer. so i stripped most of the drivers off so that i could reinstall when it was in the new unit.
Everything is now working fine apart from the CD/DVD Rom. It was working fine before it was uninstalled and i have also tried it in a different computer which worked?

You posted with a CD drive problem but now it seems you’ve transferred an operating system on a HDD from another computer!
This is a practice that will mostly end in failure.
“The drive was working fine, I transferred one hard drive with Windows XP installed into a different computer. so i stripped most of the drivers off so that i could reinstall when it was in the new unit.
Everything is now working fine apart from the CD/DVD Rom. It was working fine before it was uninstalled and i have also tried it in a different computer which worked?”
How many components have you transferred?
What do you mean “stripped most of the drivers off..”If the optical drive works in a different computer then clearly you have not installed the necessary drivers for it. Without knowing any details I can’t give any specific advice other than find the correct optical-drive drivers for the new motherboard (as opposed to the old drivers) which is what I think may have happened.
Surely it would have been easier to replace the motherboard ‘in situ’?

The only thing that i have transferred is the HDD. I uninstalled drivers as it says in this link: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/77909774/m/1400925745
Now everthing is working exactly as i want it other than the CD/DVD drive. The tab for it in device manager is not there so i cannot right click and update driver etc.

Contact the manufacturer of the DVD Drive to obtain an updated driver for the DVD drive, and then follow the manufacturer?s instructions to install the driver.

Optical Drive Drivers

In reply to CD/DVD ROM not showing in Device Manager
The Windows mode driver for ALL optical drives is part of the chip-set IDE controller driver.
If you have not installed the correct chip-set driver, installing it should do the trick.
If you have installed the chip-set driver, the best way to get your optical drive to install is to remove the IDE controller from device manager. Upon rebooting, Windows will install the IDE controller driver and then magically find and install the optical drives.
For the disk writing function, the driver is part of your disk burning software.

Consider a misbehaving Registry filter

In reply to CD/DVD ROM not showing in Device Manager
Microsoft posted the following bulletin Apr’07:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
I encountered a similar problem upon installing Vista in a machine designed for XP MCE. The following Registry edit worked fine:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet
Control\ClassClick {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Delete UpperFilters subkeyClick {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Delete LowerFilters subkeyExport the key {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} before deleting the subkeys UpperFilters and LowerFilters. That way, if this doesn’t fix the glitch, you can restore the pre-edited key with a mouse click.
Hope this helps.
