CD R/RW

By volleyer ·
My CD R/RW drive is not functioning properly. I run Win2000 Pro. When I place a blank cd in the drive I receive the message "please insert a disk into drive E. However it will acknowledge CD's that have been written to. This situation does not allow me to copy anything to that drive. Is there a solution?

I suspect that a driver or software update has disrupted the registry seting for the RW drive.

Try reloading the CD burning software that you use, and install all applicable patches from their web-site.

It is possible that you have a number of bad CDRom blanks. I have experienced this recently with a spindle of blanks the first 45 worked well and the last 5 did not. I cannot explain it, but when I tried blanks from another spindle, the CD-RW workedfine. Hope this helps.

I had the very same thing yesterday and was about to send them all back and just wanted to experiment before I did.

I got a soft cloth and wiped the recordable surface, I also breathed out on it and then wiped (carefully), may not be the correct thing to do but hey it worked for me on all of the disks.

The CDR-W's are a well known brand name as well.

Give it a shot.

Does your CDRW show in the device manager as a CDRW or not? If not then Microsoft Knowledge base Q316529 describes in detail the problem you are having plus a fix for the problem. You will be required to edit the registry if this is the correct fix.
