    CD Rom drive disappeared

    Locked

    by millb293 ·

    Hi friends,
I am running an Acer Aspire 3000 in Windows XP. Recently, the CD Rom drive started acting up (during long multi-disc installations, it would fail to recognize the CD halfway through). Now, the drive doesn’t work at all. The power light works. But the drive does not respond to the eject button, only the override pin hole eject. The CD spins inside the drive, but it is not making contact with the computer. There is no CD-Rom listed in Device Manager, or Disc Manager. I ran a driver update, and it listed the CD drive (it’s a Matshita CD RW) as one of several ‘unplugged’ devices. I also tried a Registry fix I found online by deleting the upper and lower filter values from one of the keys.
I am weary of manual dissassembly, though I Imagine it is a physical malfunction. So, if you could be very thorough with any disassembly instructions….
    help!?????
    thanks!

Try reposting this in the ‘Q&A’ forum. The ‘Discussion’ forum is for matters of general discussion, not specific problems in search of a solution. The ‘Water Cooler’ is for non-technical discussions. You can submit a question to ‘Q&A’ here:

      http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/questions/post?tag=mantle_skin;content

There are TR members who specifically seek out problems in need of a solution. Although there is some overlap between the forums, you’ll find more of those members in ‘Q&A’ than in ‘Discussions’ or ‘Water Cooler’.

Be sure to use the voting buttons to provide your feedback. Voting a ‘+’ does not necessarily mean that a given response contained the complete solution to your problem, but that it served to guide you toward it. This is intended to serve as an aid to those who may in the future have a problem similar to yours. If they have a ready source of reference available, perhaps won’t need to repeat questions previously asked and answered. If a post did contain the solution to your problem, you can also close the question by marking the helpful post as “The Answer”.

Have you checked the drive’s physical connections? Seeing as to how it was failing on and off before it went missing, I would suspect a connection problem, or it is just dead.

      Basic steps:

Let’s try and do a few:

      1) Have you tried putting the CD drive in to another machine?
      a) If it works then its most likely the system board (motherboard). If it didn’t work, then you absolutely need to change the drive.

      2) If there are no other available machines, lets try booting to the safe mode options menu and selecting “last known good configuration”

Let us know what the outcome is after these steps.
