CD-ROM IN NT

By hc_74 ·
I would like to know what could cause NT to not recognize a CD-ROM. I already know a few reasons, but I would like a much wider answer from a much bigger audience. This would be very helpful as I am a PC Support tech whose main job is servicing NT OS probems, with a few hardware problems sprinkled on the side. Thanx.

CD-ROM IN NT

The only problem I've experienced have been with a SCSI interface. Sometimes getting NT to recognize the adapter can be a real chore.
Also a lot of CD's carry a name that in reality is not the "original" manufacturer. So finding the "correct" driver to run the device. In this respect MS "Sparrow.mpd" has saved the day on more than one occasion. When that fails I've found a nice utility called CDGod (I think it was in Driverguide.com) that can get 90% up and running.

I don't know if this is on your list of "already know ..." but I've experienced situations where users have been listening to Audio-CD's and then changed to a data CD leaving the Turtle Beach CD-Player open. When trying to acces the CD through NT Explorer an error of the CD drive not being accessible, e.g., "E:\is not accessible, the parameter is incorrect. Hope it helped.

another solution to the problem: check if the CD-rom drive is on the NT hardware compability list. if it isn?t it might be difficult to get it to work

If you are on a network you may have a conflict with a mapped network drive.

Was the CD working/recognized before? If it's a new install, check that it's installed as a slave, and that the bios is recognizing it.
