CD-Rom not recognized?

By randerson ·
I have a Windows '98 machine that has lost any knowledge of the cd-rom. It is an Acer machine that was won by our school district last year. The cd-rom has the name AOpen and the model #CD-95SE/AKH. It was made on 9/2001.
I have tried several drivers, but to no avail. Is there a generic driver that would do the trick?
I cannot explore for the drive.

For Windows, you need the IDE bus driver for the chipset on the motherboard.
The driver that comes with many CD drives is for DOS access only.

Start at this web site:

http://global.acer.com/support/index.htm

and download the drivers for your model ACER.

Sometimes, you need to remove all 3 IDE controllers from device manager in order to get the new driver installed properly.

Make a "STARTUP" boot disk, and include Oak's unervirsal CD-ROM driver (CDROM.EXE), avalable from http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/msdos.htm

This will test the CD-ROM and communications to it. And if all atempt fail, I would try it in another system before trashing it.
