    CD-ROM quit

    Locked

    by piozzo ·

My CD-ROM drive just quit working. It still opens/closes and the light blinks but the machine does not recognize that it’s there. I put in another drive, thinking that it was a drive problem, but the machine still doesn’t recognize it. I am running Windows 98 on a HP Pavilion. What else should I be looking at?
    Thanks

goto bootdisk.com , download and make a windows 98se bootdisk… reboot your pc using that disk.

at the a:\> prompt, type in your cd drive letter that it was assigned… i.e. d:

do a DIR … does it list the contents of the drive… If it does, then windows does not recognize a cd drive is installed and you have to manually start it prior to windows… Both in the autoexec.bat file (mscdexe.exe line) and in the config.sys file.

Both which you can copy and paste from that boot disk.

is it detected in the bios? sounds like its not. it should be if its powering up. go into your bios and make sure auto detect is selected for your drives or manually install ur cdrom in the bios. if its detected within the bios then your install of 98 needs to be looked at. either format, reinstall, clean up, etc. also check your ide cable, make sure the cable is tightly plugged in, and undamaged, they do rock loose. if the drive powers up then ur problem lies between the ide cable, the bios, and the os. check to make sure you or someone else didn’t change a security setting to hide drives. hope it helps.
