I assume that you mean that your CD drive is not supported when you boot from a W98 startup disk.

If so:

1. Have you tried booting from the CD itself?

2. Try one of the alternate W98 startup disk images from www.bootdisk.com

Or, is your problem that you get part way into installing W98 and then after a re-boot it can't find the CD drive?

This is not a CD drive problem, but a driver problem.
The default drivers on the W98 CD do not support the chip-set on your motherboard.

The "best" way around this is to:

(I use a hot-swap bay on my set up computer to partition and format hard drives. I create a separate partition with Windows, drivers and updates on it.)

Partition the hard drive and format it using the "S" switch. format C: /s
(This makes the hard drive bootable.)

Download and extract the chip-set drivers.
Copy them onto your hard drive.

Copy the Windows CD onto the hard drive.
Name the folder for the CD something that is an easy DOS file path like \W98

Boot from the hard drive.
At the DOS prompt, browse to the W98 folder.
(enter)
cd W98 (enter)
Once in the W98 folder, run the command setup

When prompted for drivers for the chip-set, direct the driver wizard to the folder with the driver files.

This has nothing to do with chipset drivers since windows is not running, no chipset drivers (or any other windows drivers) are loaded in DOS. The bios handles all I/O until windows is installed. If this is an IDE CD Rom directly connected to the motherboard, then you need the correct drivers for your specific make and model CD drive, OR a universal driver that works on 99% of all IDE CD Rom drives except some older Toshiba or Sanyo. I have one like this or go to bootdisk.com. The MS Windows 98 Boot Disk is 75% useless. Works on only a few CD drives.
