CDRom lock out

By Gary.Day ·
Does anybody know of a utility such as floplock that can be used to lock out the cd-rom? I am working on an upgrade to a secure network where we have been asked to disable cd-rom usage except where specifically permitted.

Any ideas gratefully recvd
Thanks
Gary

Hi,
In lieu of anyone coming up with a free util, the company I work for wrote a piece of software for a client that performs what you are after. It uses group membership, whereby admins are allowed full access, and members of other groups can be either allowed no access, allowed access to cd's only if they contain a specific flag file or, in the case of cd's not having a flag file, be forced to okay a warning that the media is unauthorised and that they are directly responsible for any damage caused by it. Obviously there would be a cost for using it (if it were mine I'd give it to you). Let me know if you want more info - darthurs@hotmail.com

Have you tried to disable the device in the control panel. As far as I know only the administrators can do this so the users will be unable to re-enable the device. By default I think it is set at system. Hope this helps.

If I were in this situation, I would remove the CD-ROM drive completely.

Is the CD-ROM the only device on the secondary IDE channel? If so, disable the secondary IDE port in the BIOS and put a password on the BIOS. Then you can get in and re-enable it on the fly if you need to use it.
