cdrom trouble

By deansr ·
I reinstalled win 98se, the cdrom had been working one day and then the next it was not. I did have it reading a roxi burned cd, it read without problems. Today it is not reading anything, error D:\ not accessible
Device Manager Says all is well.

Dirty connections, try contact cleaner.

Earl,
You don't need to "subscribe" to the dirty contact issue but it happens and often. It is however a necessary troubleshooting step and can't be overlooked.

Hi,
I don't subscribe to the dirty contacts solution.

Use your emergency boot disk - you did make one didn't you? - to load the CD drivers and test the CD in the command environment. If the CD works, then it is a Windows 98 problem that is easily fixed.

Try going into the Control Panel System Device Manager and removing the CD-ROM. Then reboot the PC - hopefully the CD will be detected and all is well.

Cheers

Earle

Ok, here is what I have tried so far:

1. Remove cdrom and Reboot, result cdrom is pick again and working (so it says)

2. cleaned cdrom, result: still does not read

3. checked contacts, Result still does not read.
Note: It did read briefly, so I put Office 97 then the errors ensued and not it will not read again; never loeaded office.

In addition to my cdrom, now there is a problem with NDIS2 driver and PCI Audio Device says there are no drivers. I also get a virus alert when accessing A: drive from dos and if I type D:\ the msg i get is Invalid Drive.
All this started when I lost my os, I since installed 98se and have not been a 100%

Hai,
i think your cd drive is not dedected properly.your cd drive data cable (40pin data cable, powersupply cable) is connected improperly.
connect the cable asfollows
1.The first pin of the cables are in the redcolourline.as well as the powersupply cable has the same rule. While connecting,in the cd drive the two red colour must coincide each other.
2.connect the cd drive in secondary slave or primary slave configuration.
3.connect the HDD in the primary master configuration
